61 comet, 144cu, 2 speed trans. transmission fluid question

I have a 61 comet 4 door. 2 speed trans. Hasn't run in probably 30 years maybe. Should I change out the trans and converter fluid? If so the shop manual says to use 'A' type fluid. I
can't find it. I assume they don't make it anymore? what is the best equivalent? OR, should I just leave well enough alone. I can't imagine this fluid is any good anymore.
