3 speed manual shift transmission

Post by Benny »

Hi Guys
I've got a 64 202 base with a 260 with 3 on the tree. It runs good shifts good but it feels like I need another gear to shift into. Well...I recently bought a 1967 289 with a 3 speed manual transmission. My Question is ; when I swap out the motor & tranny's, will that give me a higher speed in 3rd gear ?...or all 3 speeds the same gear ratio ?

3rd gear is 1:1 as is 4th gear in a 4 speed, the only way to get a higher ratio is with an overdrive.

Might look into different rear gear ratios, someone will have a suggestion I am sure.

See Ya,

With the additional hp and torque available in the 289
you may want to consider a shorter rear gear for lower rpm at highway speeds.
When I had a 289 4 speed with a 3.25 rear gear it seemed like a great combo, decent off the line and would run the Speedo needle off the the end.

I'd rather do it myself if it's done right or not,,,isn't that what hotrodding is all about

3.25 gear was pretty popular in our cars and yours may already have it. If I remember correct 60 mph was like 22-2300 which I think is fine for those motors.
A taller tire would also help reduce highway rpm, and add to the cool look factor,,imo

Look on your warranty plate on the driver's door. There should be a field under the heading "axle", and there should be a number in that field that tells you what the axle ratio is.
Rear Axle Codes
Code (Conventional) Ratio
1 3.00:1
2 2.83:1
3 3.20:1
4 3.25:1
5 3.50:1
6 2.80:1
