Manual R&P Steering

Post by Joe Travers »

Are any of you guys running R&P steering on your cars?

I'm debating on pulling my power unit for a manual one but concerned w/ steering effort w/ 8" tread width.
Any experiences w/ this is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

That's boring

Power rack has zero road feel.

Joe, you plan on switching everything? Just wondering, I’ve a new manual setup for a 66 Stang (original to the 66 s) if that’ll work for you.

I’ll dig it out of storage to get some pics and measurements today.

Already have power rack & front disk conversion. All I need is a manual rack, swap over the tie-rods.
Appreciate your kind offer but not necessary. Thank you

Joe you could help that road feel by adding lots of caster . adding more caster works to improve road feel & return to center on power sector boxes,R&P would probably feel even better . but it's hard to get enough caster with stock suspension. you could put UCA's w/built in caster. I love the way mine drives but it could be better I think with more,(I got about 3.5°+ caster now by doing a few tricks),I would like about 6-7.

John, wondering if the early Mustang tubular UCAs will interchange?

For the last year I've been pondering pulling the power steering and A/C to clean up the engine bay & under dash, take weight out of the car and improve airflow through the radiator in traffic. Some mods snowball into a nightmare for a guy w/ a bad back!

Yea they bolt right on. But if you wanted to do it more wallet friendly you do a couple tricks to yours like move the ball joint back on yours. I may do it myself & save that money for something else ,,,like even better adjustable shocks or coil overs. check out the opentracker site they got a few good mods . I got a little extra caster by offsetting the shafts of the UCA's bout a hundred thousands, shifting the uca rearward. also made some adj strutrods.

Thanks for the tips! I have about 1/8" adjustment @ the strut rods now to bring the bottom forward but the UCA shaft is wedged into the top of the shock tower. No room to move it backward. No problem w/ camber. Have around neg. 1-1.5 looking @ it w/ a level. Corners like a champ.

May find a way to mount a idler pulley to adjust the pump belt & keep it for now.
More concerned w/ A/C removal but compressor pulley acts as tensioner on the P/S pump.

almost to the bottom on this link look for ''ball slide''
https://opentrackerracing.com/innovations/
Anyone could do that .

Yea I had to make a big dent in the back of my shock tower for the grease fitting on the UCA shaft after doing the offset. if I had it to do over it would be a big hole there. You gotta work to do it cheap.

have you done the shelby drop?

btw here's another thing I had to do,because I couldn't get a grease gun on it,,,,put these scott drake skinnier 90°'s ,old one is still on in this pic for comparison;

That's a slick mod! That mod looks like it would do the trick.
Measured caster, have neg 1 degree, so she's been monkeyed w/ a little. Specs say 1/8" shims will bring it back to neg 3 deg.
IDK about jacking w/ the strut rods, though they are threaded for that 1/8". Tire clearance is very tight right now.

there's your problem. You dont want neg caster,,,, you need positive caster. power steering needs more pos caster for good return to center which will give you better road feel.

after doing my comet I did a thing to my truck to make it drive better. could not find anyone to twist the i beams so I dropped the back radius arm mounts which gave it a little more + caster.
added about 1.25'' to the mounts to make them lower

after

It drives a lot better but still could be better .I wish I would have added more. I have another set of mounts I may do it to so I can just swap em out like I did the first time. probably add about 2.5'' this time.

I had my head up my rear this morning  Bassackwards..........1 deg. positive caster now.

Strut rods have 1/8" thread left to pull bottom forward.

Ok if you had + 2.5 to 3 more degrees I'd bet you'd want to keep that pwr rack. still dont know why you'd want to get rid of the ac. :? :? :? :? :? :o :o
