Very old post but I thought I'd let you know of a HEH-BK toploader compete with a Hurst shifter and Hurst mounting. eBay item number:305082151738

Not mine.

Dang that’s a rare one! I have a friend with a 64 Cyclone that has a T10…I think he needs this. Thanks!

Hope your friend got it. It sold for best offer price.

I'm hoping to find an HEH-U that I think would have been in HiPo '64 Comet/Cyclone.

The very early 5-bolt Toploader? They are pretty rare.
Don't know exactly when FoMoCo swapped from the T-10 but I'll have one for sale w/ Hurst shifter after I get the other rebuilt.
5-bolt T-10 case is B-1.

Guess I'll have to scratch that HEH-U. My 64 Cyclone has a true factory 271 HP 289 from a 65 K code Mustang so I would need the wide mount toploader. Guess I wasn't realizing the HEH-U would have the narrow mount case.

Joe, Thanks for making me realize this. I should be looking for a toploader that would have originally been behind the 65 K code Mustang engine. I also have a T-10 from a 65 Cyclone that has the car's VIN stamped in the bottom of the mounting. I ended up with the same car's build sheet but there's no note about a HiPo 271 HP 289 that is legible. Didn't Ford and Mercury only stamp VIN's in HiPo cars?

Kevin, only an assumption on my part. As I said, I don't know exact month the Toploaders came out but the first were for 5 bolt bellhousings.
If your T-10 has the H-1 case, run it. I haven't blown my B-1 and I'm pulling more torque than you. I'm switching to H-1 for more stability.
Here's the disclaimer- I don't race my car!

I had a 65 Cyclone with a T-10 and the H-1 case. Was popping out of 2nd gear when ever engine did any braking. Did some rebuilding but still popped out of 2nd. Likely I needed to do a more thorough rebuild.

Since then I've favored toploaders even though I don't race any cars either.

May just have a worn detent or spring under the shift plate.

My first 65 Cyclone (1970) with a T-10 had the same problem except it would pop out of third gear. I rebuilt it, replacing the synchronizers, but it still did the same thing. Ultimately, I just adopted the technique of keeping my hand on the shifter with a little pressure when decelerating in 3rd until stepping on the gas again. Was still like that when I sold it 3 years later. The kid I sold it to couldn't have cared less.

Just a side note- you can mount a narrow case Toploader to a 6 bolt block by either using a cast iron C5TA-6394 bellhousing or a Lakewood scatter shield. Both have dual pattern for both narrow and wide pattern transmissions. The factory C5TA bell has the bosses for narrow pattern that need drilling and tapping.

I saw that! My friend didnt jump on it. He lost his nerve so he’s sticking with the T10 for now.
