Manual to automatic transmission swap

Post by 1948F1 »

OK folks, I've hit a big snag in my plans to change engines in my 63 Comet. The original 170 is smoking from everywhere, and slinging oil from the rear main seal. So, I got a good running 200 from a friend to swap in. Simple right? HA! My car is an automatic, and the donor engine is from a manual car. I got the 170 out and transferred all my good parts to the partially stripped 200. Everything went great until I tried to install the torque converter. Apparently the end of the crankshaft is made differently for the manual transmission. Has anyone done this swap? Is there any hope? Do I need to source another engine? As always any information is appreciated. Thanks! Ed

Did you remove the pilot bushing from the crankshaft end?

I didn't know it was removable! There's hope! Any tips on how that can be done? Thanks so much! Ed

I have a clutch alignment tool with different ends for different bushings.

I fill the hole in the bushing/crank with wheel bearing grease.

Then find the adaptor that fits the hole in bushing tight, install it on the tool.

Then stick the tool in bushing hole and tap with hammer to compress the grease, have to stop and refill the hole a couple times, but the grease will press the bushing out.

If you don't have the tool maybe something else that fits hole tight. Like a socket the you can install on a extension backwards, wooden dowel, or metal rod

Hope it helps

Thanks Lou. I seem to have a vague memory of that technique from years ago used when changing a worn bushing. I will be in the shop tomorrow morning giving it a try. You have given me hope! I'm only 68 and still learning as I go! Ed

the last one I did I wasn't having any luck with grease & remembered someone used bread so I tried it & it worked! still took awhile & I dont know if it was better or what but I thought maybe the bread was thicker & didn't come out around the lineup tool as much as the grease did.

I normally use a tap that is the correct size for the hole, as it is turned in and making threads in the bushing it eventually hits the back of the crankshaft and forces the bushing out. Sorry but I cannot remember what size tap I used, it’s in the shop and right now I am not.

I’ve heard of using bread as Johno mentioned, keep us posted on your progress.

That’s a nice little puller, I’m sure it worked better than bread. 👍
