Door weatherstrip panel

Post by mercuryman »

Hey all. The weatherstrip channel on the bottom of my door is rusted away. Door has been repaired and I am wondering if the channel is needed. What do you guys think? Is it needed to hold the weatherstrip in place? Seems the adhesive would do the job.

Seeing that I am not getting any response on this I am going to proceed with making a new channel... this appears to be thin metal possibly 22 or 24 gauge.. I’ll post some pics when finished... News flash... It won’t be pretty :D

I replaced mine using 20 gauge sheet metal. Bent it in the brake. Sprayed some weld through zinc primer on the backside of the piece and on the bottom of the door and spot welded it in place.

I got the weatherstrip channel done... Not bad I guess.. don’t have a metal brake so used angle iron and body hammer.. small sanding disc to get the curves..Did the zinc primer underneath like you suggested cbcafe.. used 22gauge metal.. I’m happy with it..

Looks good, I haven't even checked mine yet, I am assuming it is there because my doors are rust free but I might find an issue. At least I know how to fix it now if there is a problem, thanks for sharing.

Thanks Mike.. they’re not perfect but not that visible, so it’s okay I guess.. Still perfecting my welding skills..

You know they say it is an art form that takes practice, none of my welds look like art but most of the time the metal stays stuck together.

Good job! The welds look fine. You won’t see them once the weather strip is in anyway.
