64 Comet Caliente in Finland

Post by Samppafin »

Hello,

I'm a new owner of Mercury Comet Caliente Convertible 1964 from Finland. I don't know much about its history in USA out of VIN code of the car. There is in VIN code that the car is manufactured in Lorain, Ohio and its done for Denver. Is there any advice how to find its history? I have also its register plate number in USA.

My car has 289cid motor with C4 automatic transmission. I hope I will get new contacts here in forum.

Welcome aboard, Sami! :D Wow...that's a good looking 64! Did you buy the car in Finland, or did you buy it in the states and have it shipped over? I'm not sure how to trace back the history of your car unless you had a connection with someone in the states with the police or DMV. When I bought my 65 I found an old insurance card in the ashtray that had the name of an owner of the car prior to the guy I bought it from. I called the insurance company, told them I had purchased the car, found the card and was interested in car's history. They said they couldn't give me any information, of course, but I asked if they would contact the guy and give him my contact information. A short while later I got a call from a guy in Georgia who had owned the car! I found out it had been converted from a 4-speed to an auto and back again to a 4-speed, the name of the paint color he had used when he repainted it, the engine is a 302 out of a 68 Fairlane, and several other bits of info. Maybe someone else will chime in with some tips on how to trace the roots of your car. Good luck, and keep us posted with pictures and what you are doing with your car.

Hi Jim,

Thanks, I bought it from Finland and it has been shipped 1989 or 1990 from USA to Finland. I do not have any old papers or hints about owners or history, only one old tax? mark stick in the corner of windscreen. Its from somewhere from USA.

Thanks! Yes, it looks like the car has been in Texas during its history. Is there available these old stickers of Texas to indentify year of the sticker?

It's a Texas inspection sticker. I Googled the number and came up with a map of the Austin area.

Not sure why unless the B or 799xxxx series stickers were issued in that area.

Did you mean one old tag, as in license plate, or do you have an old registration slip?

I think the registration tag is the inspection sticker he has shown already.

Did a little digging on the forum and there have been three other members from Finland to post. Unfortunately, the only one with a picture was posted using Photobucket, and it's no longer available. Another one has an avatar picture, but it's too small see any detail.

580HBM looks like a license plate number. What's the date on the Finnish registration paper?

Sami........I came across this link to check Texas vehicle inspection history via the VIN for the car. You might try entering your VIN and see what happens. The automated records may not go back that far, but it's worth a try.

Thanks, I tried to find with VIN but not results. The old cars VINs are 12 digits but now 17 digits so do you use there any # or *to get 17 digits fullfilled?

The first date in Finland was in 1990.

It is nice to try to clarify the cars history because I like the car a lot. In wintertime when here here is snowy I will change shock absobers to new ones and spings as well.
