My Mercury Comet from Spain (of North Caroline)
Hello everyone, my name is Deiv and I am writing to you from Spain. First of all, I want to apologize because I am writing with the translator, perhaps there are poorly translated words. I have been reading you for a long time, my enthusiasm for the Mercury Comet led me last year to buy a unit in North Carolina and bring it to Spain. I rescued the car from a car graveyard in North Carolina, the car was in very bad condition. I paid for transportation to Florida, and in Miami he shipped my car along with many parts for the total restoration. I have learned everything about these models, I have bought books on interior assembly, exterior assembly, and electrical assembly on eBay. I am sure that I am restoring the most complete Mercury Comet in Europe, no one here buys this model, everyone prefers Mustang, and I have not seen anyone who does a total restoration like the one I am doing.
It is a 1967 Mercury Comet Caliente and I have the original documentation, it is a C code with which it came with a 289 engine as standard, but the car did not have an engine or gearbox, and I have installed a 302 engine with improved parts, fully restored , along with a C4 automatic gearbox with everything also changed and restored. I want you to know that you are loved very much from the other side of the ocean, I respect you a lot, and I will never be grateful enough for giving me so much information to fulfill my dream.
Here in Spain there are no stores that can sell parts for my car, so I have bought everything at Rockauto which works very well with shipments to Spain, and at Jegs which is more expensive because it does not include border costs. We are going to finish my car very soon, we have encountered many problems because no one knows this model in Europe, and it is very difficult for me to figure out certain mechanical things, but I already have almost everything prepared. By the way, how can I collaborate financially with this club? I would love to participate in it with my small contribution. I would appreciate information on this. I am going to fulfill this dream, having my Mercury Comet given a second life, and being able to enjoy restoring it with my daughters.

Your story is an example of pure deduction! Please feel free to post pictures of your Comet, not many 1967 owners participate in this forum. I have always admired the 1967 model but have only oned one, a station wagon.

Of course, I will be a very active user, if it is not a bother to you. Also, my Comet belonged to an American man who loved cars, sadly I searched on Google and he passed away in May of last year. His name was Tim (Timothy Lee Brattain), and I'm sure he never would have imagined that his old car that he left in the car graveyard would come to life on the other side of the ocean. I am also doing a total restoration, screw by screw. I have doubts about whether my differential is an 8" or 9" Ford, and it is one of the few things I need to restore because I need to know before buying the parts to do the maintenance. Removing that problem, everything is progressing very well!

Welcome aboard, Deiv!
I'm glad the forum has been of use to you on your project. We love to see photos of people's cars and their builds, and we'd love to see yours. Many of us use postimages.org as a photo host for sharing our photos. Here's a link that explains how to do it.

You say no one in Spain knows much about Comets because they prefer Mustangs. Well, anyone who knows anything about Mustangs should be very comfortable with your car since they share many of the same parts. If there is a local Mustang club where you're located, you should go to some of their cruise-ins. Your car might draw the most attention, given its novelty.
Out of curiosity, where are you located in Spain?

Thank you very much for the welcome, I will upload photos of the entire process so far. I will be delighted. Don't be scared of what the car was like when I bought it at the car yard in North Carolina. The car cost me 4000 dollars, but it was completely rusted. The restoration process has been very laborious, but I did not have more money to buy something in better condition. Thank God, the car is turning out spectacular. I will upload photos, but in what section of the forum or department can I place the new conversation? Thanks friends!

Re: My Mercury Comet from Spain (of North Caroline)
I forgot, I live near Madrid. As for the mustang fan club in Spain, it doesn't work like that here. That doesn't exist. People with a lot of money who want to live the American dream buy mustangs, but at very high prices (around 80 thousand dollars), and that money in Spain is too much. So there are not many American car workshops, there will barely be a couple of them in the entire country, almost no one touches American cars here, it's a shame. Therefore, to differentiate myself from all those rich people who buy mustangs, I wanted to do something different with my beloved Mercury Comet. Everyone who sees it is impressed, I am doing something very personal, that is out of the ordinary.Jims65cyclone wrote: ↑Wed Jan 08, 2025 11:27 pmOut of curiosity, where are you located in Spain?

Great! I'd recommend starting a "build thread" in the 66 - 69 Comets section. You can post photos of the progression of your build and explain what you've done. I don't think you have to be concerned about shocking us with the original condition of your car. If you look through some of the other build threads in the Comet Model Years section, you'll see a number of builds that likely started out as bad or worse than yours.
Looking forward to following your project.

Great, I'll do it when I have a little time. At least the initial photos of how the car was, and the bodywork and paint. Thank you so much!Jims65cyclone wrote: ↑Wed Jan 08, 2025 11:46 pmGreat!
