Amazing Thunderbird on road course

Post by Boss/Cyclone »

I came across a couple videos of a Thunderbird sliding around Goodwood road course. The driver is pushing this big car hard.

Good question, I was guessing FE, but who knows?

Found Go-Pro video! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWPe4A0FSO0

Old Squarebird is revving higher than I heard on the other video. It's labeled '350 HP' on the hood like the original circle track 430 cars.
Edit: Bill Shepherd owner says it's a 430 in the comment section.

That is crazy, I have seen those 430's apart, weird motor. Heads have no combustion chamber, they are flat. Piston at an angle and that is where combustion happens. I guess he has figured out how to make them work in a race situation, but he probably doesn't need a ton of power to blast those cars, more about handling and the driver.

Found interesting excerpt last night pertaining to these cars. They ran the inaugural race @ the new Daytona track in '59.

Tom Pistone, driver- "The Thunderbird was heavier, we had to make up for it with cubic inches. The Pontiacs were faster, but we could keep up with the Chevys. They could run 6400 to 6500 rpm, while the Lincoln engine would blow over 6000."

Yes, crazy indeed. Mr. Shepard is to be commended.
Check out this video of the start of this year's race. T-Bird does a burnout at the drop of the flag!
