351W issues HELP

Post by Elijahs65comet »

Ok we have been talking about doing the 351w install for a bit now. Today we got everything out of the way and dropped it in. Ok, using the stock mustang frame mounts and the comet motor mounts....... I can get one side in perfectly...... the other side is about and inch away from the frame..... (like if I could get a come along and pull both sides of the car together it would work....... ) but since Im not going to do that, I may have something wrong.....I can already see that I am going to have to do the shock towers, but the manifold that came on the motor sticks way out...... it was off an F350. So one of you posted maverick headers.... ok will look for those.....

351W back to good idea, bad idea. I am about determined to go standard on the tranny..... so would it be worth time and effort to find a totalled mustang and go 302 with a 5 speed? and forget the headaches of trying to fit this Square peg in a round hole..... although it looks cool..... Im thinking, CRAP, I just fit a 350 into a Pontiac Fiero with less trouble than this...... I should be able to fit whats supposed to go in IN right'?

ok anyone, show me whos got the GIFT......

OK we have decided to go with the Crites kit, and purchase it through AutoKrafters so I dont have to put up with Crites Crap.....rudest old hags I have ever dealt with ... excluding my mother in law..... So.... anyone have a good 5 speed they want to recommend or sell?

Who has used the crites kit and what advise can you give me good or bad...

I've put three 351Ws into 65s,one with a Crites kit, unnecessary, one with notched shock towers and one with stock shock towers. All used headers, the Crites used Crites headers, the other two, custom built headers.I think you must have the wrong motor mounts and-or ,frame mounts,a 351W will use stock V-8 mounts. Hey Roy, the motor had the stock 351 mounts on it out of the truck, then I thought it might be something off so I installed the ones I had bought.... same things..... the mounts I have, I bought from a mustang.... 2 bolts that mount to the frame, and one bolt hole in the top on each side. The motor mount just has a single bolt coming out at a small angle.... I guess I should take some pics....

As far as the tranny...... I am assuming the stock clutch z bar set up wont work

The motor mounts I bought fit around the shock tower brace..dont know what its called.... has 2 offet bolt holes that go through it..... there is 1 hole on the flat plate facing upward at and angle.... dont know how I would fit a nut on the backside though....... at the bottom of the flat plate it curves up. There is a hole front and back of the plate as if a bolt were to go through it........the stock 351 mounts have 2 holes where they bolt UP into the motor, and 1 bolt coming out at an angle....... does that bolt coming out of the mount bolted to the motor go into the that hole in the mount thats angled? or is there some other plate missing? IM trying to look at others pics but dont seem to see it...

Yes a pic of your mounts would help. Stock 260 or 289 mounts work with a 351. This a easy fit so I assume you are mixing the mounts with the wrong frame extensions.

You need to post the pics on a host site and then link them to here. There is a thread in the lounge on here, on how to post pics.

Those frame mounts are for 67 up Mustangs with the wider engine bay.You need to use the frame mounts, the intermediate mounts and the engine mounts for a Falcon-Comet! The engine mounts you show look right, but those frame mounts are wrong! That is my ugly mug on the RetroSBK page,I did that notching on Wil's 65.ROY.

Hey Roy, It's been a long time since i put it together, but i did use a 2 pc mustang set on my 63. Is there two different styles of 2 piece? Last year when i went to put the 289 in my 65, i tried a 2 pc set and they were off by a inch or so in width, so i just used a 3 pc set from a falcon. I know they started using the 2 pc in 66 on the mustangs. Could it be the 66 and 67 mustangs were different from each other? Mark

383merc;yes,66 and 67 Mustangs are completely different,67 was the new, wider, engine bay.I'm not sure what mounts you had but 64-65s used the three piece mount on Falcons and Comets with V-8s. ROY.

I'll have to study the mounts in my 63 drag car next time i'm under it. I know they are the two piece style with the long bolt from front to back through the upper mount. They look just like the frame mounts pictured here, but there must be some difference. I'll let you guys know what i find. They must be from a 66 mustang i guess. I know i stripped a couple over the years and must have saved them. They do work though. Mark
