Installing mechanical water temp gauge on 65 Mercury Comet

Hello. I want to install an older SW mechanical water temperature gauge into my 65 Mercury comet. It has a 289 engine with a two barrel carb. The original electrical sending unit port is on the intake just behind the distributor. Can I use this port or is there another one I am not seeing? The only other port I see on the intake is used for the heater hose. I had these gauges on a 350 SB chevy and the port on that was in the left cylinder head. Thank you.
