65 Mustang automatic floor shifter

Post by jtgb428 »

When I bought my comet 15 years ago it was and still is equipped with a ratchet style racing shifter...to say the least even though it's a nice shifter it's a real pain in the butt..my car is a 65 Caliente and was wondering if a non console 65/66 Mustang shifter will mount up and properly work on my comet...my engine is a 289 and my trans is a c4...does anyone run this setup...thanks, Jim Jtgb428...

Jim, It has been many years so I don't remember all of the fine details of the modifications it took, but I installed a junkyard factory mustang shifter on my '65 back in the early 80's. That was with a 289 C4 combo, using the factory cable out of the Mustang. I do remember cutting a rectangle hole in the hump, although it was far enough forward to retain the factory console with no interference. Since you have a ratchet shifter now, you already have a hole cut that you might be able to utilize.
Take care, Cary
