302 Oil capacity

Post by Longroofcomet »

So, I'm getting close to starting the 302 I've build for my 65 Comet. The 302 is out of a 76 mustang 2, front sump pan with the dipstick in the timing cover. I was told all the parts are off the same block but I don't know for sure (bought the engine already disassembled). I replaced the oil pan with another stock front sump as the one I was given had severe damage around the drain plug threads. It looks the same but I scrapped the original one before I could put both pans side by side. The dipstick sits slightly lower than the lowest part of the curve in the pan around the front seal.

This is my first 302. Google and the parts store guy told me 6 quarts oil capacity. I've got 8 quarts in it now (maybe 9 can't remember) and I've got nothing on the dipstick. It did prime properly and didn't take a ton of time to prime. I shined a flashlight down the distributor hole, and I can see the oil level is pretty much level with the top of the deep part of the pan.

Do I keep going till I see it on the stick, or do I need different dipstick? I did look during assembly and the oil pickup isn't sitting ridiculously high from the bottom of the pan or anything

You sure oil isn't well beyond the full mark??? Shine a flashlight on it in the dark and check the sheen.
Stock capacity is 5 quarts with the filter full.

That oil pan is much sought after by pinto guys. It is deeper and slightly more forward than 60's small block oil pans to clear the rack. That being said you must have a dipstick problem or the top of the engine is so plugged up the oil can not drain down. Mustang II is a 5 quart system and you are way past that.

That is 76 Mustang. 5 quarts. I'm sure something is going on. Are you using the mustang ii dipstick?

I'll crawl under and look for a stamp. Dipstick measures 14 inches, and the tube is 11 and 3/4 inches from the top of the tube to the oil pan flange. As far as I know it's for this engine. Dipstick isn't fully stamped, but it looks like D1DE-6750-AA

Have you had the valve covers off? Make sure the drain back areas are plugged. The oil has to be going somewhere, just figure out where that is.

Truck pans (302)of the 70's were 6 qt. (with a longer sump area I think) but boss knows the numbers I'm sure he's right . so it makes me think of one time I had a dip stick bent a little & it cause it to curl up on something on the way in there & not touch oil. I straightened it out & it went back in the place it should ,reading correctly.

Maybe post some pics of the front of the motor? Or a short video moving around in front showing the timing chain cover and dipstick tube etc.

No oil is collecting in the valve cover. Looking through the distributor hole I can't see any in the valley, not that you can see much.

I have no idea. Everything looks good in your pictures. Those extra quarts have to be going somewhere. I'm down to wrong dipstick, but impossible to tell from here. Wish you were closer, I'd just drive over and take a look.
