260 Shelby

Does anyone have info on the Shelby kits available back in '63-'64 for the 260?
There were multiple stage pieces sold over the counter to ramp the 260 up to 260hp. Pistons, headers, cam, carb, intake, valves, etc.
Pretty sure most are same as the 289 pieces but would like to check the specs if anyone has them. Saw a picture of the original brochure not long ago. I'm kicking myself for not saving it :(

That is a nice engine bay right there!

I gave away a perfectly good 260 because I found a 331 for less than what it would cost to make power out of the 260. Probably not a smart decision but at least the 260 went to a good home.

Second link provides most of the items I was looking @ previously. If I can find the Shelby brochure, I'll share it here.
Pretty sure they're one in the same. The Traction Master bolt-on bars are exactly what I planned to do for my rear axle. :D

The kits you are referring to are "Cobra" kits, sold over the counter at Ford dealerships. You could get a Dual Quad setup, a Tri Power setup, HiPo heads, Dual point distributor, Hipo cam setup, and dress up kits. Depending on the Kit, you could get them for either 260 CID or 289 CID.

Finally found it and ordered this morning :D
I'm interested in a period correct 260 Cobra build for my car in the future. I'm running original T-10 & 8" differential now and don't plan on upgrading those or cutting on the car for more rubber to handle what I have now. Too clean to hack.

No sweat, I'm keeping the economy rolling! :lol:
The only questions revolve around the only piston available, Silvolite flat-top. Have to calculate CR w/ different heads and see if piston/valve clearance is adequate w/ long-duration Hi-Po cam.

Very interesting, doing some number crunching this morning.

In 1964, the Weber Induction Kit cost a whopping $1230.70. A new 1964 Cyclone cost $2655! Quite evident the Weber set-up was intended for exotic high-dollar road course cars @ the time.

Put in modern-day perspective, the current price for Weber induction is much less than the initial inflated value of $11,413.91. The current prices for '64 Cyclones now exceed their initial inflated value of $24,623.33.

Would be cool but still a hefty price for a low-buck car like mine. IDK, time will tell.

Joe - Do you have a 5-bolt bellhousing for the T10? Always found the smallest Windsors interesting but not worth it unless you really want "OG". The replacement piston thing is a definite limitation unless you're willing to spend the $$$ for custom. Several years back, there was a local guy trying to sell a serious 221 - custom pistons (10.5:1), nice aluminum heads, big ole cam, Vic Jr. intake. Forget which carb. Ad was around for a looooonngg time with several price reductions. Even though I'd recently purchased most of the 289 stuff, I still wanted to grab the wee motor - just cool. Already sold the 260 & T10 outta the Comet though, so with that & looking at $600+ bucks for a 5-bolt steel safety bell, let it pass.

Man, that would have been neat though. Yah, it'd never make the power of a 289 or 302 with the same components, but sometimes (more so now that I have a few gray hairs) cool can occasionally keep up with fast! :mrgreen:

Not right now but they're still floating around. Found a '63 260 engine locally but missing flywheel and bellhousing. The 289 Hi-Po cam will work w/ the 260 stock flat-tops but compression is less than 9:1. Might not be a bad idea right now. Can burn 87 octane fuel!!! :mrgreen:

Hot rod 221 sounds like a wild dune buggy engine :D
