Coolant Overflow Tanks

Post by JimsHot66 »

My car doesn’t have a coolant overflow tank. After a few episodes of dumping coolant across the driveway and in the garage I think it’s something I should get. Note: First time coolant dumped in garage because, I think, a bad radiator cap; 2nd, 3rd, 4th time were probably me overfilling radiator.

I’m thinking of getting a stainless steel tank like this https://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-300103 Opinions?

Thanks,
Jim

I have one like that on a few of my cars. They work good.
1965 Mercury Cyclone former drag car, 1971 Boss 351 engine, 4 speed, ladder bars, etc. Now returned to a street car.

Jim,
I always run an overflow tank, I have one similar to the Summit example you found. Make sure the diameter of the tank will fit in the area you have to mount it.
Here is how I mounted mine:

Oh wow! Last time I had a Schlitz Tall Boy (not the 40oz.) I had 6 of them on a bet....ouch! That was decades ago....haven't had one since.

I like the plastic ones because you can see the fluid level. The stainless cylinder will fit better where I want to put it though so I think I'll go with it.

Thanks!

Same here.
Takes up about same amount of fender well as the original bag type on hanger.

I digress further... actually they were Schlitz Malt Liquor Tall Boy's...nasty hang over. :(

Just ordered the SS tank; that with the volt gauge to replace my never hooked up amp gauge got me free shipping. :)

Get on the Bull  That's nasty stuff man.

I kinda like the stainless tank, looking @ it. I could use the space, come to think of it

Why weren't "overflow" tanks stock. My stock brandy new 66 Cyclone GT didn't have one and neither does my 63 (originally a 260) with a 289/302 have one. They were designed to seek their own level. Yup, if you race they are required.

Expansion tanks were common on the early '60s Fords. I don't know about the '63 Comet but the '66 should have a bag that hangs on the inner fender well.

Joe if you are really pressed for space the one I posted above will save more room & is also polished stainless with a nice alum cap. pretty nice piece for 25 bucks & free shipping too.

you really dont need a big one, only a cup or 2 ever gets pushed over there. it's skinnier than it's own cap;

I was working on a stock '65 last year w/o washer. Radiator was plumbed in.
A fluke, I reckon. Remember the old Mustangs had hose clamped on side of radiator to ground zero.

I guess those bags are pretty tough but I wouldn't trust them for coolant. Loman had one of the merc head washer tanks plumbed for coolant on his 65 racecar.
