3x2 manifold

Post by pfleuret »

My first hot rod was a 58 corvette with 2x4 manifold on the 283. My second was a 68 Camaro with 3x2 on the 427. Now many years later the third is this Comet. For old times sake I am interested in the manifold below which seems to be well thought of and the price is right. Any advice?

' For old times sake I am interested in the manifold below which seems to be well thought of and the price is right. "

'for old time sake' the '61 Comet uses an Ofenhauser 3 X 1 manifold and Holley 1904's on the 'old time' small block six. You can anticipate three times as much fun getting each carb to work well independently and then getting the Tri-Power setup to work together..

" Any advice? "

Whether you plan Synchronous or Progressive linkage, there are more than three times the variables with the setup - helps' to first get each carb dialed in on the center position of your engine with outer ports blocked off before getting the Tri-Power fully operational. ...

... the Offys 3X1 setup allows changing from Progressive to Synchronous operationwith two sliding linkage stops set with a screwdriver ( before staging) ...

have 3X the fun

Shelby offered a 6V intake manifold like this in '63 that would fit the 260 & new 289 engines.
New ones are $800+. You be the judge.

Finding the correct carbs could be a tall order, not sure.

Yes I already discovered the carbs are almost unobtainable. By coincidence there is this but Seattle is too far:

Holley still makes 2v carbs designed for tripower setups under $400 new so that is not the limiting factor. But I am wondering if that manifold will fit under the hood can’t think of a way to find out.

Tri power works well when set up correctly. I had a Ford Performance/ Buddy Barr set up on the 302 in my ‘71 Comet GT 4 speed. It had progressive linkage and original 3x2 Holley carbs. I even had a cruise control on the car.

Good stuff, John :D
Can't help but notice the original 260 carbs have Comet production codes 👍

Thanks for good info. And for cool tripower six photos.

It looks like the carburetors on that Seattle setup were originally for a Ford big block although now on a small block manifold.

When I first got the Camaro tripower I set it up according to the factory manual - rather than “seat of the pants”- and never had a problem.

As near as I can tell the hi-rise Blue Thunder is the only small block Ford 3x2 manifold currently available. Edelbrock had a lo-rise small block manifold for Holley carbs but no longer available.

More info on tripower Holley carbs:

For 260
list number 2867 center (200cfm) 2868 f/r (265cfm).

For 289
List number 2881 center (260cfm) 2882 f/r (260cfm).

For 390
List number 2436 center (320cfm) 2437 f/r (320cfm).

The current Holley tripower 2bbl carbs are 350 cfm.

So this is starting to look like mission impossible.

Pat, I believe this is the same setup you posted from CL, this is on the VMF site. https://www.vintage-mustang.com/threads ... e.1216079/

Yep same thing for sure. Looks like he can’t find a buyer at least for 2k.

The Tri-Power setups were selling for over $3K new before Covid hit.
It''s a drag the ports aren't photographed well. This could make a good induction piece on a cammed-up stroker w/ a good set of heads.
The question is, is there enough meat to take the ports out to match the heads?
Would need to match early 351W intake gasket to find out.

I’ve been reading up and learned that 2bbl carb cfm is measured different from 4bbl carb cfm.

So for instance the three 2bbl carbs on Ford 390 are rated at 320 cfm. So total = 960 cfm way too much for my engine. But the conversion ratio is .7071 = 678 cfm which is not way out of line. The engine currently has a 600 cfm Holley.

So I think I can use a tripower setup using the Ford 390 carbs or even the modern Holley 2bbl carbs rated at 350 cfm.
