390 motors
Re: 390 motors
Fryedaddy, just curious, how much room do you have between your hood and the carburetor?
Re: 390 motors
i still have the same clearance as my stock pi intake.i have bear block motors heads on it too.they have good quality products.huge gain over cj or gt heads, plus alu intake and alu heads makes a 390 weigh the same as a small block.loman wrote:Fryedaddy, just curious, how much room do you have between your hood and the carburetor?

I suppose you mean a small block with iron heads & intake!fryedaddy wrote:i still have the same clearance as my stock pi intake.i have bear block motors heads on it too.they have good quality products.huge gain over cj or gt heads, plus alu intake and alu heads makes a 390 weigh the same as a small block.loman wrote:Fryedaddy, just curious, how much room do you have between your hood and the carburetor?

Re: 390 motors
alot of people under estimate how well you can get a fe to run these days.that is if anyone has the bucks to sink in it.i know a guy with a supercharged fe that has 1200hp.and a twin turbo fe that has 2000.if you do your homework their is a lot of new stuff on the market these days for a fe.still nothing like sbc,bbc or sbf,but a lot of new blocks, heads, intakes, cams, efi, etc.so you can make a fe as bad ass as you want it.i have been a fe fan since i was thirteen years old when my dad bought a hot rod Galaxie with a healthy 390 in it.he later gave me that car and i eventually put the engine out of it in my comet.it ran great in the liter body, but the 433fe i have in it now is by far the stoutest engine thats been in it.its the 4th one i put in it in a 34 year period. i am so glad they have enough followers to wind up with this much after market stuff.

Re: 390 motors
All true. There are some problems....Trying to find a machine shop that knows the details of the motor,or even knows what an FE is,that's in the same hemisphere as you. Guys that wonder why the distributor isn't in the back are putting them together. From my experience, most FE guys are older and I fear the aftermarket will dry up when the demand isn't there. Nobody knows how to install a rear main seal. Re: 390 motors
These guys have been a round a few years (3-4, maybe) and are producing pretty decent 427 blocks and FE heads. Apparently they are selling or close to selling their new tunnel wedge intake. Which I think would be a great intake for a NSS car. This intake is one of the best flowing 2x4v intakes in original form, Dove or the new BBM intake. Jay Brown authored a book "The Great Intake Comparo" which covers dyno results for about ever FE intake ever made. I'm not a fan of the Edelbrock 2x4V on the market these days. They use Carter/Edelbrock carbs only. I'm a Holley guy. The Tunnel Wedge intakes are outrageously priced these days. I sold one recently, a new Dove intake for $825 as I thought it was fair. You'll see some asking prices of $1200-$2000, just ridiculous. You could talk to Barry Rabotnick of Survival Motorsports about FE builds. Jay Brown has a website http://www.fepower.net and as mentioned, the guys from Fordfe.com a 445 stroker kit in a 390 block with Tunnel Wedge intake will give you good FE power and plenty of wow factor when the hood is popped.loman wrote:Anybody hear of these guys? Re: 390 motors
Loman, There's a place here in Michigan called Survival Motor Sports. When you get the time you can get on their website which is http://www.survivalmotorsports.com. They are supposed to be FE specialists with lots of parts! They have been in a lot of magazines and also in the engine challenges, they make alot of horsepower with the 390. I've never had any personal experience with them but read magazines about them. Andy
Re: 390 motors
if you decide to build a fe,maybe you could ask a local guy with a fairlane or mustang where they had their work done at.theres usually a fe familiar machine shop fairly close to everyone.for me its S&G machine shop in bristol.im lucky they are older guys who used to race fe back in the day,and they still bracket race, but run sbf now.they are good ol boys too.wnen my uncle would have machine work done there, they would charge so little for the work that my uncle would try to give them more money and they would not take it.my uncle would throw extra money out the window as he was leaving so they would have to pick it up and take it.

Re: 390 motors
Thanks for the info. What front end are you using in your 64 FE power? If i decide to build a car for NSS, the 66 would be my car of choice because of the bigger engine bay. However, I'd have to find and buy one. I could use my white project car for this but that 390 with stock suspension would be a tight engine bay. Anyone have a FE in a 64 or 65 with stock suspension?fairlaniac wrote:These guys have been a round a few years (3-4, maybe) and are producing pretty decent 427 blocks and FE heads. Thanks for the info, I have heard of them but never really checked their website out until you reminded me of them. It sounds and looks like they know their FE stuff.caseville cyclone wrote:Loman, There's a place here in Michigan called Survival Motor Sports. Re: 390 motors
I have a Mustang II front end. It is not NSS legal. A lot of guys buy the Crite's kit that allows you to run a FE and stock suspension in a early Comet.loman wrote:Thanks for the info.
