MY 66 comet is a factory bb 4 speed.about 35 years ago i took it bracket racing.i got lucky and got to semi finals first time out,but in the next to last round i got a great jump on the other guy,who stalled.i could not find 3rd gear,i went for it 3 times.i skipped 3rd and went on to 4th and i got inched at the finish line.dang,3rd gear cost me getting to finals on my first night. after the race i was still pumped up to win 4 or 5 rounds when a friend came up and said put a auto in it and you wont miss any more gears.so i put the c6 in 35 years ago.lately i have been wanting to go back to the 4 speed.well, today i got my wish.i went for a ride, got it warmed up run through the gears, shifted at 6000 both shifts, and i noticed the engine sounded great but the car was a touch slower than norm.when i slowed and turned around a big bunch of smoke was in the road behind me.i pulled in the garage, revved it up a time or two,no smoke.when i got out i saw a line of fluid going in my garage and down the road.trans fluid leaking off the dust cover, pouring out when you crank it,stream as big as a pencil.cant drive that so get ready 4 speed, you are going back in.i was waiting on a excuse to swap back.as bad as it is it must come out.after 35 years of service that c6 don't owe me nothing.it has been a good one.i need a 4 speed shifter and a good flywheel for the change over.i wanted to gather my parts first but since it broke im already working on it.hope to get engine out tomorrow.

I have a toploader to go back in but i got rid of my shifter years ago.i have a stock flywheel but im not going to use it.i need a steel or alu..ok i got my bell loose, convertor loose ,rad, fan, headers, carb, etc, today.tomorrow im going to hook the cherry picker up and pull the engine.im pulling it out first,it gives me the option to fix it and put it back in if i wanted to.it has a fresh tank full of 110 i hate to let go bad.

why would you not want to fix it while it's out?,,do you have another engine to go back in it's place ?? that fuel won't sour right away,,,

i have the engine ready to come out.all im like is hooking up the cherrypicker to the carb pad.,i might holler at my neighbor to run the picker while i guide it out.i dont have to get his help.but it sure makes my wifes nerves alot calmer if i have help when a engine is going in or out.

the best thing I ever did to my cherry picker was take that cheesy hook off it and replace with a swivel hook that is big enuff to do the job and has a spring loaded button to mash to unlock the hook,,,I loaned it to a friend one time ,,he cussed that hook to the high heavens,,he said I started to take it off !! I told him had he taken that hook off,he never borrow it again,,,it is so much safer,no way will the chain ever slip let alone come off and hurt someone,,,if I didn't learn a thing after 36 yrs with the railroad,,,by jing'o's,,,OL POP knows how to work safely....we have a portable A-frame and a electric hoist you just plug into the wall,,no effort at all useing it,,but it takes to long to set it up,,most times we can have the engine out in about the same time it takes to get it ready to go ,,so we fall back to the trusty cherry picker...mine stays outside in the weather,,every so often I lube whls and all pressure points on the mast....it must be 30 yrso at least or older...hang in there,,,you'll have that old ford back on the road before you know it..pop

Do you still plan on racing? There IS that cool factor with the 4 spd but the C6 is better for racing. There really isn't a lot of guys that are successful with the traditional stick and clutch setup.I see them at the races....granny shifting, missed gears, bad reaction time, broken parts, etc. Your C6 problem is probably the pump to converter seal but could be a cracked converter or pump body. They are pretty easy and cheap to rebuild. All you really need for special tools are a clutch spring compressor (made my own) and snap ring pliers. If the trans is a 1966,they are one year only so you have to watch for that.

i dont plan to do any more racing unless its a street race or maybe a test&tune once in a blue moon.c6 is out of a 428 torino.if its not too bad i may fix it and put it back together for now.but my ol junker is a little rare with the bb 4 speed, and i have not changed any gears in a long time.i miss it.you are right,Mr grip about the old 4 speeds, not to many people master them without breaking parts and missing gears
