61 4dr. bumper bolts.....size

Post by 61 Waycrosscomet »

so I got some new bumper bolts to go with rechromed bumpers. The thread size are the same as the old bolts, but the square part under
the bolt cap is slightly smaller, say by a 1/16th of an inch. Is this ok? I know the square part has to be big enough to keep bolt in place while
tightening nut. I got the bolts from Dennis Carpenter parts place.
Is there a good source for exact size like old? or is this one of those things where they just don't make the exact same size bolt?
Seems like there are alot of bumper bolts for the falcon......thanks. john.m

All the ones I found for my 65 were just chrome covers on metal bolts like the originals but I didnt want to promote rust so I went to fastenal & got SS carriage bolts. They were not polished & kinda cloudy, & had raised lettering on the heads that made polishing them difficult so I chucked them up in a cordless drill & spun them on a platform sander. It gave them a turned or machined look, looked much better than before . best I remember they were kinda small in the square holes too but they caught enough to tighten them down.

bumpers will probably be last thing I put back on.....just trying to get some ducks in a row a head of time.
Some of the original bolts are still good and will buff the stainless cap back to a nice shine. Just need some new bolts to replace
the ones that are too far gone.
