COMET CENTRAL

Minor update. I called Eaton Detroit Spring to discuss the front bushings. They are setup for a 9/16 bolt/sleeve and the bolt that i have is 1/2 inch. The sleeves in the Mustang springs are pretty rough so I started looking around. I remember the 63 Jones build where he mentioned the front bolts were expensive. I did a little digging and found that you can buy replacement bolts that come with a sleeve and the large"saucer" style washer. They are about $55 per side so he is right they are not cheap. I went ahead and ordered them from FCRC machine and waiting on them now. I thought I would post a pic in case someone is looking for them in the future. I'll let you know how well they work.

Quick update. The new "bolts" for the front leaf spring location were perfect. The large collar is pressed on and the shank was the right size for the bushings. I think its a quality product and made in the USA, just a little expensive. Still waiting on the rear axle. I had to push them to agree to finish it this week. Between the company moving and the Covid 19, I was getting concerned they had lost it. Garage is messy waiting on this axle. I hope that I can get it installed next week and then the Comet is off to the muffler shop. Stay safe.

Actually Darryl you need more sfuff, hanging off the walls laying around and a messy shop certainly doesn't have room for a bicycle built fof 2!!

The real problem is that stuff sits in the spot where my wife parks. While the weather is good, no issue. Rain like today = issue.

Waiting on that axle is bugging me. I ordered some new spring plates today (Currie) and a universal joint 1310/1330 that may work. I guess we'll see.

I am looking forward to driving it. I met a guy in Garner a few weeks ago that has a early 70's Maverick and he thought there was one other Comet in Garner. Been looking for it cruising around but haven't seen it.

We did some of that testing on a rental in about 1970,,,,
Dont remember anything about riding them but still got the girl!

it can't be said any better ,,FRED,,,thank you !! there is so much work done in POP"s shop we won't or don"t take time to strightn it back out,,,,just tonight I told DWAYNE,,after this cobra,,,this place needs a straighten out and a good sweeping...

Sweeping is about the only thing I do almost every day, mostly out of necessity because I have to constantly battle leaves blowing in and most times I am sweeping out the same stuff every day because it blows back in, someday (when it is not so vital) I will get the front enclosed on the shed.

I have an issue like Darryl with using my wife's parking spot, I clean-up every day and put her car back in.

This strikes close to home since I have been laying under the Comet a lot lately. Harbor Freight has recalled some of their 3 Ton and 6 Ton jackstands with Item numbers 56371, 61196, and 61197 made from 2013 to 2019. Mine do not match the serial numbers but they sure do look the same. See below:

Yes I have a pair of 6 ton like in the right picture I bought after I started my rebuild, so less than 2 years old, I also have an old pair that are pre-HF that look somewhat similar guess I won't worry about them, I always give the car a good shake before I go under just to make sure it is stable.

I dropped my Comet on myself once, I was lucky and still had tires on it, it still bounced off my chest and left a bruise, that was a long time ago before I owned any jack stands, but I learned a lesson.

boy,if that was to happen today,,,as low as your comet sits and as thick as your chest is,,the pressure would blow your socks and shoes plum off your feet might pooch your eyeballs out just a tad,,,,just proves you can't never over do safety...…we have already started teaching CHASE,,the grt grd son,shop safety,,,,he has his own little safety glasses and eye googles and a small pr of leather gloves,,,we have to help him put them on,,,he's bad to get 2fingers in the same hole.
