When I replaced the cable on mine I must have gotten a quart of Georgia red clay dust out of that panel access. Mine was originally purchased in Macon, GA, and apparently spent a lot of time on GA back roads.

Jim
Mine has a bit of limestone dust, Jim. Not hurting a thing but needs to be cleaned out, nevertheless.

Joe here's a pic of the little bracket. I have a close up pic of the bracket somewhere, even had a spare one but i think I sent it to someone on here, or I could still have it. but it has a slot in it that holds the cable. the cable has a hat-brim like flange that fits in the slot of the little bracket.

also you can see I ran mine out the hole in the bottom that Fred may be talking about. It's just below where the floor would be. this is where convertibles cable exits I think, they're all different because of the bracing .

but mine doesn't work well with the 2 sharp opposing bends in it & I dont trust it. I need to re route it.

Thanks for the pic, John! Yes, my '63 the same as your shot of hole below the clamp. Here's '64 Caliente pic I took from the current auction.

Image

Looks like cable exiting back of torque box, running through the crossmember, clipped on the back side with a retainer. Found all of the holes under the car. Looks like I only need the clamp holding the cable under the pulley on inside firewall, return spring for equalizer bar and retainer clip on crossmember. I see one odd thing; appears my equalizer bar is flipped to the passenger side. :?

I probably have more time invested in installing the pedal type parking brake than any other component on my Comet. It’s my own fault, I tend to go overboard when building something. I used an aftermarket pedal assembly and fabricated all the brackets and mounts. I had a local shop make the three cables to my spec’s.
It would been quite a bit easier to use the factory under dash lever and other factory parts.
Here is how it looks under the dash:

And under the car:

This is were the upper cable mounts under the transmission:

I also have an LED indicator light that illuminates when the brake is activated.
The good thing about all the work put into the system is that it works well.

Very, very nice fabrication, Jim 👍 Yes, I'm going to have to make the stock unit work out after looking at all of this. The driver side vent box hugs the kick panel and doesn't leave enough room in the '63.

I'll try to get it jacked up in the next few days, flip the equalizer bar and see if I have adequate clearance with the exhaust system. Right now, the bar is riding the top of the right side pipe a bit. Flipping it may cause binding. I'll find out soon enough.

This is the parking brake return spring that I used on mine:

Not sure if this is type clamp you need on the firewall or not, but:

Variety of cable retention clips on this page:

Thank you, Jim!

If the spring works for you, it'll work for me. The retainer is correct, I believe. I don't think the firewall clamp is correct from John's description?

The ring on the cable fits the groove in the bracket? Si? Postimage doesn't allow me to magnify your picture.
Rear floor pan....firewall.....toe board.....sounds close enough
Sold in pairs, bet you they are for the back cables but may fit the front one.

Yeah, if he blows the front U-joint, won't wipe out the E brake cables so he can stop the car, if needed.
Smart move gained from past experience? The stock location wouldn't take kindly to a driveshaft dance.

Actually the tubular drives shaft loop should keep the drive shaft from dancing under the car or pole vaulting me.
Thanks for the kind words!

I need to pick up a master parts catalog for this car. :? Shop manual not detailed enough.

There is a spring, pawl and pin that locks the handle into the housing that mounts under the dash?
My handle currently pulls completely out w/ no type of resistance.
Lost my zipper  Fortunately Melvin's has this stuff.
