Need input on selling 63 S-22 Hardtop

Post by junkmurray »

Well, I've had fun and done some a whole lot of restoration on my 63 S-22 Hardtop over the last 11 years but I'm moving in a different direction now. So I'm looking for any and all suggestions on selling my car, i.e., recommended websites or auctions, valuation, etc. I'm thinking of going no minimum sale as a possibility. And I'll need to get rid of various parts and manuals I've collected. Maybe I'll call it a Comet estate sale!

I know some of you will think about talking me out of it, but I'm pretty much set on letting her go.

Kind regards.
Tim

I would say it depends on the condition. If it is really nice many have had good luck using "bring a trailer". Facebook marketplace or facebook Comet groups would be good to. Maybe post some pictures and a rough idea of what you are hoping to get for it. If no one on here makes an offer one of us may know someone who would make and offer.

As far as valuation-

Several '63 1/2 S-22s have hit the market in the last year in the $30K range but I don't see any sales.
May want to look at them and size things up. Hagerty guide doesn't break down the Comets that well by body style or model.

I know there's a "sales" forum so I'll only post a few pics here. Appreciate thoughts on ESTIMATED value in the current market. Per Hagerty classification I'd put it as a high 3 / low 2. But I saw the 63 Comet Custom Hagerty valued at 18k (and classified as a "2") from the Feb 2018 Leake Dallas auction and I'd put my car against that all day long as a better model (and yes I'm partial to S-22's). Mine is not numbers matching but has a 260 V-8 (Fairlane) that I had rebuilt a few years ago. Transmission is also updated. I have the original wheels and center caps as well...and I know how much those center caps are worth, so may sell them separately. Also have all the full 2 volume parts manual in addition to the Detroit Iron CD's and a Motors 1965 Auto Repair Manual. And as we car folks can appreciate sundry other parts / clips / etc. including some trim and a carburetor. And if somebody outside Texas purchases the car I'll remove and sell the 1963 Texas license plates separately since I know how difficult it was to find them (special car registration if you have same year license plates).

Long story short - I "think" the value is in the 18/19k range based on current market, but this is where I'd appreciate input. And I'm seriously thinking of going open / no reserve pricing.

Kind regards.
Tim

Sweet car, Tim! :D
Just as nice as the 25-35K cars on the market now that aren't selling....

Beautiful car Tim. Very nice example of an S-22. I have been watching some online sites and Streetside Classics had a white 62 Comet mostly stock
(offered around $19K if I remember right) and a black 62 Comet (mods include 351W, Mustang 2, C4) that was offered in the low 20's and eventually sold. My guess is that your range is about right. You're always gonna get those folks that aren't that serious but I suspect there is a Comet fan out there that would love to drive your car. See links below:

Nice car! I think you could get low 20k if you're willing to wait. My concern on going the no reserve pricing, like on bring a trailer, won't you be stuck selling if the bids are low? It'd be a shame to sell it for less than 15k.

I’ve been researching S22s ahead of buying one. I looked at a fairly stock 1961 S22 that needed work to be a daily driver. Owner was asking 15k. It’s still for sale. 15k to 17k seems the area most sellers are asking for an S22 that runs, but needs additional work. I’d watch what the Comet Custom on BaT sells for and see what your car offers compared to that one. I recommend against a no reserve price anywhere. You could get really lucky or have your heart broken. Good luck with it!

Thanks for the input.

I've looked at the BAT and auction info that you've all graciously pointed me to. Seems like most (all?) are mods of some sort. Mine's pretty much stock except for the wheels, a C4 transmission that was installed prior to me purchasing, updated radiator / fan blade, and HEI distributor (and resulting required change to the air cleaner). Of course "stock" means lots of work to fix broken or worn out parts, but I know I don't have to tell anyone on this site about that. And someone's mod is another's requirement, e.g., HEI for points, front disc brakes (which was on the list but never got to it), etc. For me a mod is lowering, bigger engine, swapping bench for buckets, automatic to manual or vice versa.

Looks like the going price has been in the 23k range (not including BAT or other seller commissions). Guess I'll do a listing on this site, on the Mercury Comet Facebook page, and Craigslist here in Dallas. I'll keep track of the questions and try to update the listing with the essentials. If nobody bites at 23k in the next 2 to 3 weeks, I'll put it on BAT. If it doesn't sell on BAT...who knows, maybe I just let it sit in the driveway.

Honestly the thing I now dread is the patience of dealing with lots of questions since as a tax guy my busy season is just starting but guess that comes with the territory.

Best regards.
Tim
