Thanks for the thoughts. Agree I need a better solution. Thinking I might be able to make a mount for the defroster/speaker grill without chopping up anything.

Image
The factory mounted the tach on the defroster grill in ‘64 & ‘65. They mounted the tach so the face pointed to the rear of the car, I welded up the holes and mounted mine angled to the driver. I used a factory cup and stem but mounted an Auto Meter gauge to match the dash gauges. All the lighting is led’s.

after a quick search I'd bet these 100lb magnets would hold it on the speaker grill. I'll be thinking about this for mine. would save my grill from getting cut or drilled, though I already have one hole for the wires but maybe they could have went down thru the corner of the defrost vent.

looks like the stronger the magnet the higher the price on that ad.

That looks like the same kind that I am using. Plenty strong to hold a gauge.

Plenty of room for the wires to go through the defrost grill and behind the duct. Stock Sun tach mount won’t work at all even with the magnet idea so have to think about that.

Also solved the mystery about no radio sound and no driver side defrost.

I installed a Sun mini-tach in my Cyclone years ago. About the same size as the stock tach that was missing.
Did what Jim did, mounted it facing driver seat on the dash in stock location. Easy to read w/o taking your eyes off the road.
Just my 2 cents. Won't buy a cup of Joe.

It must be different than my old sun cup bracket I think mine would work with the magnet

With the bracket at front of the grill the back of the tach has hard interference with the window.

Cut the mounting bracket and flip the base on an angle like the old Rotundas?

Image

Here's my AutoMeter tach. Steering shaft is modified for R&P, a little more room. Maybe a band and bracket like mine would work on column or dash?

Got the tach mounted to the defrost grill. Much better. Thanks again for comments and suggestions.

Thinking it is a good place for the engine gauges too. Existing cluster is in the way of a A/C evaporator and also too small for me to read. The Autometer “classic chrome” gauges are a good match for the Sun tachometer.

I’m going to include some details in case anyone might want to see the installation.

A length of 1/4” alum bar is the base for the gauges. It screws to the defrost grill. I’m using a rubber strip to avoid the possibility of rattles or creaking.

The gauge mounts screw to the alum bar with 1/4-20 screws.

I’m using an electrical connector so all the gauges can be wired up on the workbench and then everything installed as a unit.

Next photo when it is assembled.
