Console lid fasteners

Post by pfleuret »

When I got the car one of the three speed nuts wouldn’t hold and a second was weak. Now the third has given up. Well they did the job for sixty years although seems a poor place to use a light duty fastener. Anyway thought I would check if someone else has already solved this problem. Couple searches came up empty.

Good that the studs are still there.

find something that will fit up inside the nut (smaller than the hex but flat ) then with a small hammer or hammer & a punch & tap the top of the nut back flat against what ever you used under it.

Thanks will give it a try. Also going to get some fresh speed nuts can’t hurt.

I let this sit for a while. Decided to see if I could put some decent threads on the (very soft) cast aluminum studs. Used a 1/4-20 die the usual way then upside down to get another thread on the studs. Worked ok. Holds the lid in place. Will use loctite on final assembly so it can’t loosen and chew the studs up.
