61 4dr. Stainless install with windshield seal.

Post by 61 Waycrosscomet »

It took me a while to find someone who has experience with older car windshield install.
They knew the stainless goes into seal first, then seal onto window, then the whole shebang onto car.
I did not observe the whole install process, but when they got me and said they were done, I was not too pleased with
the stainless not being down all the way against the seal. One vertical side was fine the other side it was 'up' about 1/4 inch or so.
They said its as far as it can go it. It was new glass, and new seal and original stainless.

1. Any ideas as to what went wrong?
2. Is this a common issue with the windshield stainless?
3. If I ask them to redo the windshield can the seal (gasket) be reused or do I need to buy a new one?
( I think i got the seal from Dennis Carpenter parts)
4. What should they have done originally to ensure the stainless is down in the 'slot' where its suppose to be?

Sorry for all the questions: My shop manual only talked about the 'order' of install. ie: stainless, then glass, then into frame of car.

thanks. John.m

Well sounds like they dont want to spend any more time on it. but it will need to come back out. maybe talk to the owner of the shop & ask him if he sends work out like this) But if one side is right then the other is wrong, how did they explain that? they didnt do it right & they hope you go away.
it is possible the seal wasn't made right & wont let the trim go all the way in. but that should be apparent before installation .
but no it is not common & it is not the way it should be. If the seal is good it could be that they didnt have the top & bottom pieces centered perfectly or something wasn't quite right ,but the molding should lay flat.

I guess one more question to add to my list:

is the stainless suppose to cover all the black rubber on the outside? ie: fit within the width of the stainless? It's been a few years since
I removed the old window and seal so I do not remember. As it is now, the seal on the outside is wider than the stainless.

Looks like the trim does not cover the seal in these pics:

.... here's some pics of my '61's WS - never been taken out with cracks and all' . The 'reveal' of black rubber appears only on 'inside' edge of SS trim.

Drivers side trim is raised @ 1/8" at top of A Pillar , replaced headliner without removing WS and added trim on WS in cabin.
.
'63 Falcon appears to have same WS and trim...

Thanks for those photos.
I figured out that the stainless is not to cover all of the glass seal. So feel good about that.
On my car, there really is only one vertical trim piece that is not laying down like the others. gapping about 1/4 inch for about 1/3 of the trim
piece.
When doing this restoration, it's a bit important to have all the visible stuff to look correct. the glass installers got most of it right.
Currently in talks with someone else in the restoration business and will ask around. He mentioned that to do it right, you should use some
sort of urethane adhesive with the stainless trim and glass before hand, then let set overnight, then install in car window frame.

I'm sure everyone has different methods.....doesn't help being a perfectionist.
