Mercury Comet Timing chain woes

After getting great answers off the Forum I got into the engine on my 62 Comet with a 260 V-8. The timing chain has so much slop, it seems that the timing has slipped. I am going to replace it with a new chain and gears. The problem is I cannot get the two marks on the large and small gears to line up like they are suppose to. They are off almost a quarter out. I took pics but the board attachment quota is full so I could not upload them here. I want to make sure I get the marks the way they are suppose to be before I continue. Thanks again
