What engine do you guys think i should run in my '64? will be using the toploader for a tranny.
all engines would have electronic ignition and headers.

What engine

Post by CALIFORNIA CALIENTE »

The reason I voted for a built 289 is that finding a true hi-po,271 horse engine would be tough and expensive. You could build a nice 289-302 for less and make more horsepower. The 351W is a good choice but makes a tight engine bay tighter plus adds weight over the front wheels..If you want more cubes there are plenty of affordable stroker kits out there. I vote with Roy . I put a 351W in mine and if I'd known the amount of modifying it would take I'd have put a 347 strocker motor in it.

stroke it

My vote is a 351W and stroke it to atleast 398 cubes My son runs a 398 in our Mach 1 vintage stock car and WOW does that thing have the torque. Actualy I would stroke the 302 into a 347, its light and small and can build a lot of horsepower JC

built 289/302 is my vote.. eagle conrods, forged pistons, aluminum heads, offy 360 intake, holley 650 dp and a hotter cam and you are set to go  and its not too expensive to build and easy to find parts

well guys, i think im gonna build a 289 then. heres the plan:
289, .30 over
polished crank
forged rods and pistons
ported heads
dual plane intake
holley 600
moderate cam, something a little lumpy, but still streetable
roller rockers.

biult right, im hoping to hit the 300 horse mark, maybe a little more. im not looking to build a 10 sec. car, just somehting that will smoke'em

alan, i actually had a 351w stroked to 427 lined up, but decided the car couldn't handle the power, i think my doors wouldn't fit after the first drive...

and i dont want to wedge an FE in there...more $$$...

thanks for the input guys. i appreciate it.
