Was thinking I mentioned. This someplace in this thread but was looking at my sig and the term ‘budget build” you all know that doesn’t mean cheap necessarily but the mods I just want Done budget wise.
Non cheap budget things were my engine choice a small block wouhave been more budget friendly and tried and tested swap but not what I wanted so I went to what I wanted however I did get to mod my oil pan to th e10quart winged wonder pan and am happy with the results I hacked up at home
Still all in all I guess that comes Down to enjoy ing mys elf so far certainly happy with how the Comet runs and drives so far  (needs much more drive time) and I love the look. 8) No one. Else will ever appreciate the Comet like I do

I dig the cammed up high compression 6 banger!
Getting that induction system working well, see what ya got, is my bag with your car.
Was wondering if you ever thought of building a sheet metal intake for the carbs.
It's an old budget-friendly hot rod tradition. You can use epoxy to radius the runners to customize flow.

Joe
I had considered making a composite base in the beginning but then was able to develop the cast approach so that is why I am going that way. Once cast and attached I will then have 3 ports that I can switch up carb mounts and make adaptersto bridge and change runners etc if I need, I have thought I’d things like sidedrafts if I found a good deal or I was not happy with the Escort carbs but you know they are going to work great  if I can figure them out still going th see if I can find the casnisters that tune them automatically as change elevations so when I am driving over the mountains on Route 66(bucket list 8) etc. just have to figure out if I Need one setup shared or3I am guessing each carb will need its own canister now to remember what they are called and search around and find a set

Hood scoop video https://youtu.be/hyZPqo1PMXY
Not really a scoop because it has no openings but really that helps I can decide where I want my openings and which direction I mount it will be nice to get a hood back on there I just have to decide now if I want to mold it on or have exposed fasteners instead
See Ya,I think I have decid to mold the “scoop onto the hood and make the hood look like a custom one piece fiberglass hood like teardrop hoods but an offset hood instead. I need find some kind of grill work to go in back like a teardrop has

Talking about a pan for the carbs-

The drag guys are building sheet metal bases for cold air induction. Curl the lip like a traditional open air filter breather. Use thick wide foam glued around perimeter of the base plate that will mate to the inside contour of the hood. Don't know about clearance for your linkage but I would try to drop it a bit, getting it under the plate. This way the carbs are isolated to cooler open air. If you want to vent heat, you can always remove the cowl-hood seal and jack the hinges in the back a bit.

Crazy thing about my car that is pretty cool......when pressure builds under the hood with speed, the hinges lift a bit on their own, venting heat. 8)

Not sure I will have a heat issue with the big block radiator and the narrow i6 that will let the hot air slip past easily.
I will most likely make some sort of isolator plate as you suggest to grab cool air from above the hood instead of the hot engine bay, has to be beneficial.

Re: Lavron's '64 Build Thread fixing a goof today

Post by lavron »

Today I finally made it out to the shed for a bit, I basically set one small goal of cleaning up my rear trim that I had over sprayed with red primer because I rushed one day and did not mask them off. I had to take some acetone and clean the silver parts of the red primer, but I had red overspray on the black parts so decided to mask the trim parts after removing them from the car and doing a light over spray in flat blackImage
Actually it is the look I originally had planned so it worked out :? going to leave them off now until the car is painted across the back and try and not rush so much

grab the stem and try to twist and pull it...might be able help seat it better....might work might not...then re soap it
After a few refilling on the right rear tire it appears to be healing itself it is not going down as quickly, will still address it in the future, because the tires need balanced anyway, so while I am at the he shop I may as well have them tighten the valve stem down.

Got out today for a little bit of Comet time and worked on the left rear quarter I finally got some build primer but I seem to have an issue getting that one spot sanded down near the front top of the wheel opening so I still need to try again there

Getting real close now to moving over to the right side :? I did grind that goopy spot back to bare metal and redid it, if I did not say that already :?

Was able to get out a bit this morning and almost have the left rear quarter fillwork done, still waiting on my filler primer to get here so i can do the roll on experiment  but really close now,I will have a few divots to spot gaze as well but the sun got out and hot before I got everything done I wanted, cooler days coming in a few days supposedly.Image
Imagethat is all nice and smooth except at the very bottom where the quarter rolls over to the pinch weld and I need to address that by getting the back of the car jacked up and on stands so I can reach it

Looking good, Mike. Getting it smoothed out nicely :D
I'll be dang, ya'll are going to make me into a body man sooner or later. I tackled an Econoline many years ago with good results. A Comet just might be a walk in the park? IDK but willing to find out when the time comes. Worse thing I remember was the dust and I was working outdoors. Just have to work upwind, I reckon.

I actually enjoy making this repair from old junk patches, sure I would have liked to had a good quarter to weld in there but what kind of challenge would that have been? Just wish the heat would ease up a little and I could get down on the floor better like I used to be able, just going to have to push myself a little more in that area and get back what I lost, don’t think it will be forever before this arm is good again.
You are right about the dust for sure, it. Is messy for sure. Again one goal in my build is to prove you don’t have to wait for perfect replacement parts but.can make something work and not tell a difference it just takes a bit more time.I also saved several $100s and time finding quarters using what I already had and making it work, plus I got to use more of the parts car I already bought for parts  it has payed for itself fully now, even though I thought I was paying too much for it when I bought it, been able to help a couple of other guys along the way.as well and there is still parts left on the car  I guess never underestimate how much good raw materials there are in an old rusty rooflessComet  I wish I would of got there soon enough to get the trunk lid before he sold it.

AIN'T nothing like a good plan and for it to come togrther,,,,we all like to see the results,,,,the most important thing on a build is not to burn yourself out on WORK.....so many do this very thing, work every wakening hour they can ,then all of a sudden they are exhausted and tired, then the project sits for mo's or years and is sold just to get rid of it,and get it out of sight, and many times at a monatary loss...so pace your self and try to make the rebuild a happy thing,,,,and if possible, every now and again, include your wife if at all possible,,her input is priceless,,an extra pair of eyes or another opinion never hurt a thing..good luck ,enjoy yourself and when it's done.....it's done !! Working just a few minutes aday soon mounts up......winter is here so stay warm and above all have a good time ,,,,pop
I wish I had gotten more done on mine before the tumor and stroke, it has slowed me way down but I will still get there just will be a bit more difficult and slow, just will not settle for inferior work and use Heath issues as an excuse,if I could just get my wife to let me be in the shed to spend some quality time on the Comet without her feeling she has to watch me constantly, but she has her reasons  And does not want me to fall and get hurt up there so I will indulge her for now
