Esoteric- adj. intended for or likely to be understood by only a small number of people with a specialized knowledge or interest.

Reiterating what you have already confirmed by the 'D' engine code in the Ford publication for 1964 Comet in a previous post.
The DSO code is proof it was a special order from the Los Angeles plant.
It would be very interesting to know who ordered it and for what purpose. It could have a very colorful history.

I agree with the specialized knowledge. My dad ran a Lincoln/Mercury dealership in the early to late. 60's. A lot of the special order (DSO code) cars were placed by employees. Mechanics, Service managers, salesmen, etc. And they did have the specialized knowledge and information the the general public didn't have. He said employees in the sales were more prone to special order cars with different paint colors and appearance items, where the mechanics/service managers were more likely to special order cars with the upgraded performance engines and drivetrains. Which makes sense because they would have the information on the more rare stuff. Now not saying that is the story with this Comet, but many of the DSO cars were employee ordered.
