Steering column question

Post by vicegrip »

1964...The steering wheel kinda clunks around when turning. The car has some kind of aftermarket wheel.Anyway, removed the wheel and the turn signal switch and I find this tapered sleeve that goes over the shaft, into the ball bearing in the column hub.I'm thinking there's supposed to be some kind of retainer on the shaft to hold the sleeve to the bearing but I don't see anything. This is obviously where the clunk is happening. What am I missing here? I should know this but it's been a while.

My memory is as foggy as yours, but here's the procedure if that helps.

I think there is a spring above the sleeve under the Swheel like here.

you might could just loosen the column strap at the bottom of the dash & pull the column up tight against that spring Fred mentioned & then tighten the strap nuts.

Yeah...apparently missing the spring altogether. This might have been a result of the guy trying to install the aftermarket SW.Have to study it a little more...

A few guys here have gone to different steering columns, if you put the call out you may find one here.

By the looks of things, the guy replaced the spring with a couple of short steel sleeves that I would assume came with the aftermarket wheel.Didn't work! I was supplied with a bucket of bolts and small parts with the car.The spring might be in there.
