Finally building my 64 Comet

Post by smithhe »

Well, I started building a new engine for my 64 comet about two years ago but these past three months I have really been getting at it, got the motor and trans yanked out a couple weeks ago, built a 347 stroker from a 85 5.0, got a nice c4 built, and I am currently in the dirty process of sanding down the whole engine bay to paint it and then slap the new motor in. I will post pictures of the process once I figure out how to do that lol. if anyone has any questions about what im doing to it feel free to ask!

Congrats on the progress! getting started is the most important progress! :lol: When I was cleaning the gunk off & sanding my engine bay down to metal the most aggravating thing for me was the shock tower braces in the way. then I got to thinking I'd put in an export brace ,,,a removable bolt in piece;

so I cut off the factory braces & that made it much easier to get at the firewall. & the new export brace made things easier after it was all built too.

here are some tips on using postimage, for pic posting

thanks for the help with the pictures poboy! I really contemplated chopping out the shock tower brace and buying a new one but I think im just gonna leave it, I also bought an export brace for it as well as a connector to stiffen in between the bottom of the shock towers where the LCA mounts.

Another update for you guys since I have all the time in the world thanks to this virus, just got the under engine brace in the mail, it’s a little over 1/8 inch too wide to fit in between the shock towers right at the engine mounts, I’m think about just grinding it down on both sides enough for it to slide in since the metal plate is very thick, let me know what you guys think I should do.

Yea a little off the sides wont hurt .

Thanks for the pics but if you click on the ''HOTLINKS FOR FORUMS'' it will make the pics a lot bigger & easier to see on desktops/laptops. as it is they aren't much bigger than a thumb nail so we have to click on each pic to see it good.

Well I’m at a stand still with this under engine brace, I ground down each side to about half the thickness that it was and it still won’t even budge, I tried getting it in there with a BFH and it still would not fit, has anyone had experience with one of these braces? I really would like to use it and stiffen this car up as much as possible but I can not for the life of me get it to fit.

check the measurements of the bolt holes of each & if the car needs to spread apart some then like barry said use a porta power or a bottle jack & cut a 2x4 to fill the gap & spread her out a little. If the bolt holes are the same on both the car & the brace keep grinding on the part till it fits.

If you do end up using a porta power check your toe after you could hurt it,,,, ya the big one :lol: :lol: :mrgreen:
I'd rather do it myself if it's done right or not,,,isn't that what hotrodding is all about
