Another Aussie 64 Comet Build

Post by AussieJake »

So after pulling my Comet off the road to “do a few mods” it somehow morphed into a full build. It’s funny how these things work out. 😂 Anyway, as one thing led to another and funds allowed I am finally getting to the business end of the build. I thought I would share the build now the finish is somewhat in sight. Knowing what I know now I would most likely have done things differently but I’m here now and happy with the result so far. Here she is before pulling her off the road. Image[/img]

Unfortunately following a mishap with my phone and computer I lost a ton photos from the start of the build but have enough to piece together most of it. It all started here with yanking the old 260 out of the engine bay. At this stage all I was going to do was a suspension and brake upgrade.

I wanted some bigger feet underneath the back and due to the size of the brakes on the front suspension I had chosen (more on that later) I had to put at least 16” wheels on the front. Given that there are a lot more options in wheels and tyres at 17” I found some wheels I liked and bit the bullet. Getting the rears to fit led to this.

An engine upgrade was always on the list and what I had in mind was never going to agree with the 8” single pegger so decided now was a good excuse to put a 9” in there. A ‘checker’ bar was used to mock up the correct width I was chasing.

In order to fit some decent headers the towers were notched and the new front suspension test fitted. Then the towers were plated up.

The initial plan never involved a paint job. Then this happened.

Thanks Pop. Certainly didn’t happen overnight but it’s getting there. I’ve had some good help too.

Was absolutely awesome that this 50+ year old car was so solid. After the very minor repairs on went the epoxy primer.

I wish my '64 was that rust free (even half that). I love seeing a sedan getting proper care :P

Great build!
Would you put a name on those struts?
Very clean go start with, there are a few prople druelling over those 1/4s!!
Hope the finish stance is as low as the setup pic with the rear wheel.
Lov'em low.
Noticed the floor looked to be out in one pic?
More pics please.
Fred
I'd rather do it myself if it's done right or not,,,isn't that what hotrodding is all about

I'd say welcome aboard, Jake, but it looks like you've been aboard for a while. Just took a while to start talkin'. :D But once you did........holy cow! You've been busy! It all looks great! This obviously didn't happen overnight. When did you start? How long did it take to get it to the primer stage you've shown so far? The pics are great, so keep them coming.
