64 T-5 Tranny swap

Post by Benny »

Hello All
I recently bought a T-5 transmission to bolt onto my 289. I'm almost ready to yank the stock 260 & 3 speed tranny out. My question is will this 5 speed fit without a lot of hacking.... ??

Benny someone will come along with a definitive answer soon but a few things they will want to know is what the T5 came from and what is the bolt pattern on the 289, I am not sure if the 289 can be a 5 or 6 bolt motor, I think most modern bell housings are 6 bolt and if that is what you have then it should be a fairly straight forward swap.

Anyway, you will need to have the information on hand at a minimum.

See Ya,
Mike

A 5bolt BH takes the narrow bolt pattern.....if your tranny does not have both sets of holes per ear...you have a problem...I have a T5 in my 84 5.0 capri but it's been so many yrs since we built it,I can't recall if it has both holes on it or not......pop

If you use a Mustang T5 like I did, you’ll have to cut a hole for the shifter and there is a cross brace under the floor there. Plenty of people have cut it without trouble. The shifter location is good with bucket seats. If you have a bench you way want to use an S10 tailshaft which moves the shifter ahead. Other than that you will need a trans support crossmember. I built my own.

The forward-mounted shifter position is a tail shaft housing from an S10 T5.
