Starter Help

Post by kyudizky »

Starter seams to be giving out on my '64 convertible. It was on the car when i bought it, and it appears from the engineering numbers to be a reman unit originally from a '72 Crown Vic. I have a 347 motor with a 4-speed toploader (tag indicates originally from a '66 Fairlane GT 390).

The drivetrain was in the car when I bought is so I don't know a lot of specifics other that what a can decipher from the tag #'s.

Looking at a Powermaster mastertorque mini unit and I basically have 2 choices, the 9603 or the 9604. The 9603 is for 157 tooth flywheel and says it replace units with a nose that extends 2 3/8" from the mounting surface. the 9604 is for 164 tooth wheel and says its for units with 2" nose from the mounting surface.

I removed my starter and measures the nose last night and its 2 7/32" mounting surface to the nose... almost right in between the 2 options.

Summits site says the 9603 is for MT that are "usually 5 speed" and the 9604 MT that are "usually 3 or 4 speed" , so i am leaning towards the 9604, but scared i have an anomaly since mine measures almost right in between 2" and 2 3/8". Picture attached of the existing starter.

Any ideas??? Appreciate the help as always.

What flywheel are you using?
You could mark a tooth and rotate the crankshaft slowly and count them.
I may be jumping the gun with this. Check more replies.

I wish I knew what flywheel. I haven't had the motor out in the 10 yrs I have had the car. This is the first time the starter has even been pulled.
