Interior Door Handle Assembly?

Post by kevinshi »

Howdy folks -

I am struggling to remember the assembly of the interior door handles on my '65 convertible.

I think I might be missing a step or an adjustment point... right now my escutcheons are loose/floppy behind the handle.

What is the mechanism to have the escutcheons fixed in place (to cover the mechanism screws)? Should I using an adhesive to stick the escutcheon to the door... or is there some thick washer that needs to be added to push it against the door... or perhaps even the internal mechanism needs to be adjusted such that the lever post is not sticking out so far from the door?

Bahaha - I just spit coffee out my nose!!!

I have a couple of those springs that I have been stumbling over for months (years at this point) wondering what the heck they are for.

Thanks!!!

Do you have the clip removal tool for the handle clips, or did you use "the rag trick"?

I have the tool.. but I sure do not want to use it on my fresh paint so I've yet to actually install the clip...

Is there another nylon washer used with the door handle (I know there is for the window cranks)?

Or is installation order as simple as follows?
0) Door skin (fresh paint)
1) Escuthceon
2) Spring
3) Handle
4) Clip

(What is the rag trick?)
Thanks,
kevin

Think the rag trick is for removal though I have never tried it. I always use a seal pic. On installation i put the clip on the handle but not in the lock position but about half slid off ,push the handle on & then use the pic to push the clip in place.
As for your installation order the spring (22624) goes behind the escuthceon. & keeps it pushed out so it doesn't rub paint

The rag trick is where you slide a shop rag between the door handle and door panel. You wrap it slightly around the shaft, hold both ends tight and pull the rag out parallel to the handle. The rag gets shagged on the clip and pulls it out. I used it on a handle that a PO installed with the closed end of the clip on the inboard side of the handle rather than the outboard. I couldn't get in there with a pick to pull it, and I didn't have a removal tool. So always install the clip with the closed end facing away from the crank handle.

Installation is easy. The end of the shaft is tapered. Slide the clip all the way onto the handle, apply a small amount of lithium grease to the tapered end of the shaft, put the handle on the shaft clocked to where you want it and give it a bump with the heal of your hand. The clip will slide over the end of the shaft and into the groove.

Forward is the way it should be but I have mine turned to the rear.

Funny. That is what I thought and it sure seems to me that they are more useable pointing rearward - at least on a two door convertible door.

I dialed up that illustration in my Ford MPC (thanks for the pointer - for anyone following along, its page 1605 in the illustrations only .pdf).

Interestingly it indicates that the 65 Falcon used the same escutcheon and spring for door lever and window crank (22620 & 22624). I believe that is mistaken... both the Comet and Falcon used a decorative (painted) larger diameter escutcheon on the door lever but a simple/hidden smaller nylon (white) one for the window crank. The *spring* might be the same (I think it is) however the escutcheons are not...

It bothers me that I am going to put this metal spring up against my fresh paint. I do not like that idea. I demand better! ;-)

kevin

Read the note on the link to C&G's website I sent you.
It mentions something of that nature but I'm not certain of the details. I sold my '65 about 25 years ago and it's all brain fog. They are very good people and may be able to help if you can't get it sorted out.
