Should my hubs spin while in park?

Post by Comatt »

So I noticed the other day when I jacked up the rear of my car and took the tires off with the car in park the wheel hubs spin in both directions. Is this normal? Shouldn’t the hubs be locked while in the park position? I also tried pulling parking break hubs still spin both directions. This seemed odd to me can anyone tell me why this would happen?

If your parking brakes are adjusted properly, you shouldn't be able to turn the hubs. I'm not an automatic guy, so not sure, but I think if you have both wheels off the ground they will turn in park. I'm sure an auto guy will correct me if I'm wrong.

If it is not a traction lock that is normal, as long as the other side spins in the opposite direction. Like Johno said.

Hey Jim,Okay so the lock nut they’re talking about is inside the brake hub? Is it only on one side or both sides of the car? Thanks for that info that’s helpful!

Before you adjust the parking brakes make sure the back brakes themselves are adjusted right.

& no the equalizer is up near the trans, its where the front cable meets the back cables. you can tighten or loosen there.

the u shaped piece at right is the equalizr.

The drums have self-adjusting brakes. Only thing you need to check is the adjusting screw to make sure it is free. Here's a pic-

Image

Circles are around the star wheel w/ serrated teeth to adjust the screw. Access through the slot in bottom of backing plate. Insert a skinny screwdriver to push on adjusting lever that rides on the wheel to release it. If it won't turn w/ an adjustment tool, it won't self adjust. Old ones often rust up and freeze causing brake fade.
