Need help phantom drain

Post by Comatt »

Hey guys, still trying to chase down a phantom drain in my 65. New alternator, new battery, new regulator. Car reads 12.8 volts on the battery, when I turn it on it on and turn on anything in the car I get 12.4. Battery keeps dying as it’s not charging. If anyone could give me any ideas where to start to fix this problem let me know. Thanks!

What’s your battery read in volts with the car running? I believe your alternator should put it around 14.2 - 14.7 volts if working properly.
Though new, the alternative may be bad.

With the car running battery reads around 12.4 volts. Been dealing with this problem for a few months. Previous alternator tested good but I just put a new one on to see if I still had the problem and it’s still not charging.

You definitely have a charging system problem. If the belts are tight and alt is good, it’s more then likely something to do with the wiring. Start checking continuity, breaks in wires, fuses, and grounds.

Ditto on the above, as well as possibility new alternator could be bad.

Just wondering, do you have an external voltage regulator on your car? If so, that could be the culprit.

I do have a voltage regulator, replaced it twice already. Don’t think that’s the problem.

I had this problem a couple years ago on a Jeep.
Mine was corroded alternator ground. Cleaned it up w/ steel wool, viola fixed.

Will check out the grounds and wiring and post again if the problem is fixed or not!
