Which Doug's Headers for the 1965 Comet with 289

Post by sanderjs »

I read many threads saying Doug's tri-Y headers are the best fit but its hard to tell from pics and part numbers which site is selling the right ones? I don't know if they are using a generic pic or their own part number so they all seem to be different. Does anyone have a Part number for what they bought and where so I can make sure I get the right ones?

Thank you.

Few different or same ones I have found:
Pertronix and summit numbers are similar....

661Y is larger diameter tubing than 660YS for manual transmission. May be a better choice to go w/ smaller o.d. in a Comet for better clearance. IDK about Doug's but the larger Hookers have to be hammered in a couple spots for clearance.

Thanks Poboy and Joe, I have an auto so I appreciate pointing that out! From Everything I am reading it seems I would want the D660YA headers, they are 1-5/8 which I am assuming is the smaller tubing size?

I've never owned or seen long tubes smaller than 1 5/8" for SBF I can remember but I've seen larger.
I think my Hookers are about 2". Used to run Blackjack & Hedmans many years ago.

Not easy installing OTC headers in a Comet, I'm afraid to say. :? Not like a F-100.
Automatic transmission will cut you a little slack.

I have the manual trans Dougs in my Falcon. They fit great but yes getting them on and off is a job that involves engine mount removal and a lot of patience.
I reinforced my shock towers so they’re thicker than stock…that doesn’t help things.

I've got the Doug's auto headers in mine, and it seems all engine bays are different. I had to hammer mine pretty good in several spots to get them to fit - shock towers, pitman arm, idler arm mount, etc. Well built headers, but mine needed a lot of "mods" to fit. Some guys say theirs drop right in (and some guys say a 351W will "drop right in", too). Not for me.

From what Ive read they have to about be hammered flat to affect performance on a street car.
I'd rather do it myself if it's done right or not,,,isn't that what hotrodding is all about

My D660YS for a manual transmission fit perfectly. All I had to do was r/r the zbar.

You mentioned the pitman arm and I remembered mine was hitting the header too…until I added the Shelby quick steer kit and now it clears by a few thousandths of an inch
I also recalled that I had to work them at the Lakewood scatter shield flanges.

I guess I meant easy to pick which ones to buy, I am fine with doing a little hammering.

I know. My back started to ache badly just thinking about installation. Just blowing off steam.
Please post your findings, if you don't mind. Always interested in this subject. Ran this by two Comet race car owners many years ago. Both cars had snaked custom sets on 289s.

Thanks

I will post back later but I probably won't be building my rebuilding my engine and transmission until next year so it may be a While.
