235/60/15 rear tires and 15x6 wheels

Post by Heloman »

I was reading this article on Hemmings and wanted to know what you guys thought about his wheel/tire combo?

Do you think I could fit 235/60/15’s on 15x6 wheels without any modifications? Would 4” backspace or 4.25” backspace be ideal? Thank you.

How high will the back of the car be? (I prefer low)
A 6” rim is too narrow for a 2.35, you should use a 7” minimum. A 60 series might be too tall also, the outer wheel house on a ‘64 is narrow at the top. Back in the ‘70’s I ran a 2.35 - 50 on a 7” wide, positive offset rim on my Cyclone, it just fit. The front of the wheel opening was real close to the tire, and the car was too high in the rear for my current taste. ( but it was in vogue at the time)

Here is what it looked like back in the day....

Like Jim says, the ride height you're aiming for in the rear will have a lot to do with what you can stuff under it due to the taper of the fender well and how high your tire rides in the well. Also, as Jim said, your 6" rim is too narrow for a 235 tire. The minimum recommended is 6.5", and the measuring rim that the tire design is based on is 7". This link tells you the relation between tire and rim size.

This link is good for comparing the dimensions of different tire sizes to each other. Bear in mind that the width dimension is using the measuring rim width for the particular tire size. Rim width greater or less than the measuring rim will affect the tire width slightly.

I'm running 235/60/15s on 7" TT2 wheels with 3.75" BS on the rear of my 65 and have no trouble with them rubbing. However, the rear on my car sits higher than Jim's '64. You can get an idea of my car's stance from my sigpic. I bought the wheels and tires at the same time and went through a lot of measuring and figuring before pulling the trigger on the purchase. Ironically, with all the concern and measuring, it was the 215/65/15s on the same rims that I put on the front that gave me some problems with occasionally scrubbing the leading edge of the fender on turns with a dip in the pavement. I should have gone with a 205/65 or 205/60 on the front, which would have still worked with my 7" rims. My tire/wheel journey is in this link starting part way down page 1. May be some nuggets in there that will help.
