64 comet throttle pedal assembly/289/trans

Post by barbee6043 »

I am converting over my 64 202 Comet from six to 289 auto. I am ignorant old Mopar guy! My gas pedal assembly has no bracket for a kick down cable. I have a 289 engine but no trans as of yet. It will just be a driver. I have the 5 bolt conversion parts for front end and 8 inch rear yet to pick up. I assume I can go with a C4? and do I need a 64 Mustang pedal assembly that uses a cable kick down??

The 64 comet used a linkage on the intake manifold that held the kick down. I think I have mine floating around here somewhere I could take a photo of.

This linkage is mounted to the intake manifold https://www.ebay.com/itm/166370233699?m ... media=COPY

It has a lever where the kick down rod is attached.

Thanks fr the help!!! 50 years in Mopars teaches me little about Fords!!! My 64 Comet was a 6 cyl and auto and it ha a ROD for the lickdown like Mopar. No doubt going to the 289will require a different kick down rod! I did find that bracket on line and have it now. I also have a 66 289 Fairlane I am also building but it has a running 289 and C4 but missing he correct pedal bracket but I have found that KD cable for it! Thanks for the help!!!

Be aware the stock accelerator bellcrank won't directly mount to some aluminum intake manifolds if you decide to go that route.
The Edelbrock doesn't have the cast-in pad like the stock cast intake. IIRC, Weiand does.
I have an adapter plate sandwiched between my Performer RPM and stock bellcrank. Have to tinker to get the rods corrected for the spacer.
You could use kickdown on Holley carb, if you go that route. Different possibilities for different setups.

I did pick up a eddie knockoff and I see it will need a fabbed deal to work. Will a kicldown rod off a Stang work>>>??

Here's pic of my MT bellcrank on Eddie intake-

The adapter raises the bellcrank just a scooch. Have to set idle speed and bend the rod until it fits perfectly in the carb lever or change to threaded accelerator rod.

The bellcrank for AT has an additional lever on the end of the pivot shaft that faces up, I believe.
The Mustang bellcrank is a bit different, don't know if the rods are the same length.

Did a deep dive on the kickdown rod, going to be tough to find. Here is an old ad for one for early Mustang-
https://www.2040-parts.com/1964-1-2-196 ... --i228909/

Comet is column shift so may be different configuration/length compared to floor shift.
FoMoCo part# is 7A187. C4OZ prefix is my best guess.

Happy hunting

yes it would be nice to know what interchanges between 64 comet and stang Ford cheaper sometimes, NOT always and definitly not easier as I have my learning curve!!
