since you have it running good now,, maybe check to see if choke is set properly, cold, first thing of a morning. it should be almost all the way closed, then after one pump the choke should close the little gap it has & it should set fast idle. loosen the choke horn & turn until it starts to open ,then turn back until it just closes all the way & tighten screws. only after choke is known to be set right can you set the fast idle . you cant set the fast idle first then set choke because choke movement will affect fast idle. so if choke isn't set right the fast idle will be thrown off too.

you may have to reset choke in wintertime.

Try depressing the throttle pedal to the floor twice, wait a couple seconds, then turn key.

Yep, carburetor automatic choke adjustment is like tire pressure check. Seasonal thing and regular maintenance issue.

Why I prefer manual choke.

Guys,
Thanks for the carb choke tips. I will look at it again. The normal temp in the shop is 66F. Will try the double action on the pedal.

Guys,
I did try the double pump on the pedal , and it did start on high idle. More testing required.
Cheryl and I took "lil red" up to Erie for pizza and a trip around Presque Isle State park. We got lots of thumbs up and comments too!

Guys,
Thanks on the pics.
Trying the double pump on the gas this morning and it did not work. So more to do on the fast idle
Cleaned the bugs off the windshield and graded the comet north to lake City for breakfast.
Must say it is a pleasure to drive now. And getting up to 60 quickly and bring it back down is much more comfortable.
Hope things are good in comet land.

Guys,
Cheryl and I took the Comet out for brunch. While there this nice Impala came in and I snapped some pictures.

Back home we let the Comet relax in the front yard while the weather was nice. The 25 mile round trip allowed me to test on the driveability of the Comet. Pretty pleased at this time with the car. We have driven around 4000 miles this year. Lots of smiles per mile. We had many thumbs up from others as we cruised along.
(Side note just depressing the gas pedal about 1/4 of the total stroke seemed to set the carb to fast idle.)

Guys,
I checked a couple things on the lil red Comet today. Had John in the seat and slowly pushed the gas pedal to see where the choke closed. He said he moved it about 1/2 inch and the choke closed. he started the car and it was on high idle. Temp here was 70 degrees.
Also looked into the top of the carb and watched for fuel to be delivered by the accelerator pump. Almost as soon as it moved there was some fuel delivered. So I don't plan to bend the rod pulling the accelerator pump at this time.
Thanks for checking in on me. Weather is so nice, we need to get in the cars and take a nice ride!

Comet folks,
Well our weather has turned to rain and in this neck of the woods at this time of year it sure could be a foot of snow here in the snow belt of the Great Lakes. The little red Comet is warm and dry in the shop. We had to squeeze it in next to the other cars in the shop for a maple syrup event Friday.
Friend John has his 46 Ford in the shop to replace all of the electrical wiring with reproduction wiring harness.

Comet folks,
Happy Thanksgiving!

I am considering new leaf springs on the Comet this winter. I have looked at the Eaton information and was considering the set with additional 2 inch in height. I think I had mentioned this before and there were some good comments and suggestions. This would be a project maybe in January?

Hope things are good in Comet land!

Are you talking 2" above your signature pic?
Looks very nice height and rake wise to me.
I'd rather do it myself if it's done right or not,,,isn't that what hotrodding is all about

Guys,
Thanks for checking on me. A couple of things about the signature picture.
A. I had larger tires on the rear, So now the rear tires are 1 inch smaller.
B. The new front springs have raised the front end at least an inch. So the Comet is more level and almost feel a little low in the back end.

Looking at Jim's red Comet Cyclone picture above I think my Comet sets about like his right now. I don't have a good side picture as a comparison of our current stance?

I do like the look of our sig picture. Trying to get back to that look. I am not looking to lower the front of the car. It handles well and does not bottom out when hitting our local test divot, at 50 MPH, in the road near us! It would hit pretty hard with the old suspension.

So the 2 inch increase in new rear springs might lift the back a little bit? And I am ok with that! (maybe a car problem I had as a kid??:))

Also as mentioned it might take some strain off the rear air shocks? Also might stiffen up the rear of the car a little?? It seems a little soft, but I am not a great judge of these cars either.

Happy Thanksgiving to all the Comet forum members! We will have family in the shop around all my junk tomorrow. Should be interesting!

Chris and Cheryl
