Radiator Coolant & Rear-end Lubricant

Post by FuzzyDriver »

I drained the coolant from my Comet right after I got it so I could replace the heater box. The coolant was a sickly yellowish color. I don't intend to put that stuff back in; I might even need to flush the system. Searches tell me to make sure I don't use modern antifreeze. I remember back in the 60's the anitfreeze I used was bright green. What type of antifreeze do you guys use in your stock engines?

My baby:
1964 Comet, 200-6, stock carburetor, new aluminum radiator, all new hoses.

I'm also considering changing out the rear end lubricant since there's every possibility that it's never been changed (knowing what I've figured out about its history). Anyone ever seen a problem with Mobil-1 gear lube?
OK...so she might need a little work.Image

This is a valuable source of info but for coolant good ole ethylene glycol mixed 50/50 is a good place to begin.

Thanks. I bought some old-fashioned antifreeze from O-Reilly's. There are very few brands of that left, BTW.

Hoping your Comet is coming along, and once mine is back on the road I'd like to stop by with it and check out yours.
