4 ways switch installation

I'm looking to see if anyone can give me any information on installing a new emergency flasher switch. The previous owner had removed the switch and did some rewiring to make things work. Sadly the gage lights do not work now. I have purchased a new headlight switch and the flasher switch from Melvins Ford Parts but I am not sure of the correct way to wire them in. Anyone with any incite on this problem will be well appreciated. Thank You

Can't answer you question, but welcome aboard! What year is your Comet? Mine's a 65 and was not equipped with emergency flashers.

Welcome on! comethead tried to add the emergency lights to his a few years ago but I think he gave up on the idea. I always wondered if it was because of the way the comet front signal/parking lights were wired from the factory> parking lights go off when headlights are on unlike newer cars that leave them on for running lights. But there is a way to convert that by making some changes at the light switch.

Thanks for the diagram. My son is an electrical engineer and should have no trouble figuring out what needs done. I wonder if any of the 65's came with emergency flashers. And yeah your cyclone is pretty bad too

Thanks but mine is a caliente. yes 4 ways were an option for all comet models,here's the options for all models in 65.

So I was curious about this & was looking at how the mustangs did it. for the first ones up until late 66 had an add on harness for the emergency flashers. so you would just unplug the multi wire connector at the steering column & insert the harness to tap into the front & rear lights & it has one power wire to the cig lighter attaches same way ,then some wires to the switch .


this would be the way I would try to add them on without splicing into my original wiring, it would be plug & play I believe,according some of the vendors which say their harness fits comets,falcons, & mustangs. but even if something is different your elec tech son should be able to change the add on harness easier than changing you cars wiring harness. But! since someone has changed your wiring it may not be plug & play! lol but here is one of the add- on harness I mentioned, I did see some cheaper but I'm putting this one up because it says it will work on a 65 comet;

That's the exact same switch that I got from Melvin's Ford parts so I guess I'm on the right track. Just hope the previous owners wiring job hasn't screwed up too much. I see they put a 10 amp fuse inline on one of the wires. Don't know what they were thinking.
