wheel & tire size....again
wheel & tire size....again
hey guys, looking to get my 64 on the road. I've been through this site & did the search, with MANY different sizes.
I'm looking for plain & simple.....
my best thought.....torque thrust 14x6 with 205/70/14 tires. on ALL 4 corners........ no rubbing, bumping, moving stuff...just bolt on & go.
this should be good correct????
thanks

Re: wheel & tire size....again
There is more to fitting wheels and tires to a car that just wheel diameter, width, and tire profile. You must consider wheel offset and any suspension parts that might interfere. 14” tires are very limited now a day, reproduction tires are expensive and not always round. You need to decide the height of the car front and rear, then do some measuring of the space available, have a tire spec sheet and wheel dimensions handy for comparison.
When I had a standard width 9” in my Cyclone I had a 2.25-50 on a 7” rim in the rear, it was only possible because I used a wheel with a positive offset.

I would check the price on 14" tires if you can even find them, 15" don't seem far behind but they are in stock at most tire stores still, this is important if you are 100 miles from home and need a tire to get back home
I did 15" on the front and 16" on the rear on my Comet but it is way not stock, but the rear is close to stock width and while it is a chore to get the P225/60R16 on the rear (16"x7" with 4" BS) the front ones would go on the rear easy (P195/65R15 on 15X6" with 3.5" BS wheels).
I can't say what the 14" tire size was on the car before but I don't think the 15" are much bigger at all.
I am not opposed to 14" tires just that they are getting hard to find and that means more pricey and I am a cheap-skate
See Ya,
Mike

Like Jim said, you're really restricting yourself on choice of tire brand, features and availability in going back with 14" wheels/tires. You'd be better served going to 15". A 205/65/15 is a very close match to a 205/70/14 as far as diameter (only 0.19" larger), but much more available. The 15" wheels would also make it much easier to convert to front discs brakes later, if you wanted.

The P-205 will be about 1/4" wider than the 7.75-14's the car originally came with, regardless of diameter.
The 15" Torque Thrust wheel has about 1/4" more backspace (3.66") than the 14" (3.42"), so you'd need to figure that in if you're extremely tight on your current tire clearance. Cut a straight stick so that it will fit across one of your current rims, resting on the rim bead like the wheel weights do. Measure from the back of the bolt pattern where it mates up to the drum to the bottom edge of the stick. That is your current backspace (less the thickness of the steel). Compare that to the new wheels and the clearances you measure between your current tires and any obstacles to figure out if the new combo will fit without interference.

FWIW I’ve bought 14” tires from amazon twice. They don’t show my exact match today but they show several 14 inch tires including two same size hankook for $65 each.

You must have seen that sale going on (don't remember the website).
Always loved the old TTDs and thought about it when I saw the low price.
Have to stick to my budget though, so I'm going to rent a fender roller to tuck the tires.
I'm running 205/60-15s on 15 X 7 Mag500s all the way around.
I doubt I would run 'em up front, if it weren't for the rack & pinion conversion.

No biggie. It'll happen one day and you'll be the first to know, Pop.
