Shifter trouble

Post by Proverbs27:17 »

On my 64 Comet wagon the automatic shifter pulls down easy. However, let say if you shift to drive you can't shift it back up to park, reverse, or neutral. I have to get out, pop the hood, and physically pull the linkage back up. Suggestions to the problem?

Pop, I haven't had a chance to look. I just know it's real frustrating!

The shifter will move back in forth from park to drive no the column with no problem. However, once you pull it from park to drive it will go down but the linkage will not go back up on the column. I have to get out of the car and physically pull the linkage up with my hand. The linkage will go "down" but not "up."

but when it hangs up & you try to go back up will the shifter go up to park ? or does it hang too? If the shifter goes up but the linkage doesn't I would first check where the linkage attaches to the lever on trans ,it has a slot for adjustment & could be the lock bolt is loose. but if it isnt sliding in that slot then it may be the top of the shifter tube inside the column under the s wheel,,,where the lever comes in. it has a tab riveted or spot welded on that is prone to pop off but could be something around it worn out so it doesn't work right.

Gotcha. The shifter will go back up to park but the linkage stays down.
