‘64 Cyclone at Mecum auction

I saw this while looking through the lots being offered at the Kissimmee auction:

They make a big deal about the headlamps, T3’s were used on GM vehicles, Ford products used Ford oval logo headlamps.
Being it is a Mecum auction I am not sure about the quality of their lots. (My opinion from seeing hundreds of auction vehicles)

Think it will fetch $50K? Curious.
I found a concourse '65 A code for $20K by private seller this year. A dealer picked it up and turned it for $40K.
Did any '64s get out the dealership with a HiPo 289? Very few '65s did, if I remember correctly.

My Opinion:
A ‘64 HiPo Comet is like the Loc Ness Monster: many people have claimed to see it but no one has proved it exists.
There have been documents that said Mercury offered a “Daytona” package in 1964 to commemorate the 100,000 mile durability run at the Daytona Motor Speedway. The package was said to include the 271hp 289, a 9” differential, and a four speed. I have never seen one of these.

I'll share your opinion on this. Too may 'legends' created over the years to add a little mystique (or false value).
The 65s can't be claimed without a dealers invoice. The HiPo cars had A code vin number. The K engine could be dealer installed but very few were.

Hate is a terrible word but I think it applies to the wheel and tire combo on that car!
Says the motor is built to 271 specs not that it is one.
I'll take my mudded up rusty hack over that thing any day.

The few true hipo's I have seen have mostly been 65's and all had an export brace, the only 64 hipo I've seen had a D code in the vin. Looks pretty nice but I'm with Fred, don't love the rims and I'd take Sassy over this one too.

True, Fred and there's too much 'mystique' around the HiPo engine as well. Very easy to build a much stronger one on a budget, these days. Only benefit of building an original HiPo would be for an original car, which this isn't. One of those 'what if' builds. Nothing wrong with that if that's what you dig. Only thing I don't like about it is the way over-sized wheels.

get real guys,,,,car for car it is probaly better shape then SASSY and popscomet put together,,,,JMO ...as far as whls ,,to me that's a mute point,,,,this car is all new every where,,in and out,,,,the length of ownership is what makes ours so important...and the fact they are owner built,,,built to 289 hipo specs don't mean nothing to us but it does to someone who doesn't know anything ......all this is JMO....POP is still out to lunch on the red headliner...pop

20 odd yrs ago a friend of mine was in a salvage yard and noticed a pr of headlights in a old ford that had the oval with ford on them ,,,gave a dollar apeice for them and brought them to me....so I have a pr with ford in the oval...have them put away in a box ..don't recall if they 6v or 12v,,,but one day I'll run across that box and refresh my memorie,,hope that box is where I put the orignal seat belts for my comet...pop

They must pump that place with some kind of funny gas, some of the prices people pay for marginal quality cars is insane. Cars bought at auction do not come with a carfax or for the most part any guarantees, it’s not for me.

I disagree. For some reason early Comets including Cyclones do not bring big money. This car was not original, ( not a bad thing) but I still don’t feel it was worth the selling price.

The HiPo is listed, for whatever reason. I was surprised it was there. Being this is a HiPo clone, (aren't they all?)..........

My opinion, this is the 'mystique' thing I was curious about. Someone is developing a market for the clones? IDK
