New chassis under 64 Comet body

Post by Red Lehr »

I'm in the planning stages of my 64 Pro Street build. I'm looking to put a 650 HP FE power plant in and due to the fact that my frame on my 64 is in sad shape , I've given serious thought to a new rolling chassis. Has anyone here put a new chassis under your 64 Comet ?
Doing the fab work isn't the problem for me, it's getting the time to get the work done. Please chime in with any comments, all help is appreciated.
Thanks to Fairlaniac for all your help so far !!

Greetings Red,

64 Comet is a unibody so I'm not sure how you'd do a true rolling chassis? There are places who make the front and rear frame rail replacements.

I suppose one could design a frame that went all the way across (moving the center sections to follow a path like the subframe connectors).

Front suspension still ties into the shock towers and all, so "rolling" would be a little tricky.

I'm sure you'll get more knowledgable body guys to chime in here shortly.

I'll know more about sub frame condition after the car is media blasted...
Checkered Racing does some nice work and it's within reasonable driving distance, 4 hrs. away.

Loman might give you some advice,I think his black car has a tube frame. another route to consider if your front frame is good is to back half it & it'd be a little cheaper. here is a good thread with pics.

Thanks Poboyjo65....Great info.
I have two cars to draw from, one was a parts car headed to the scrap yard and it came with 2 extra doors and a deck lid all in good shape, and I bought the red 64 which is an original 4 speed car.
The red 64 wasn't as good as it looked, (big shock) there is a lot of Frankenstien patching under the car on the main frame, floors, etc.
Here is my old thread: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=6703

My car is 2x 3 box tube frame. It is very similar to Failaniac's and Tunnelwedge's car from firewall back. I believe he tied the frame rails into the front subframe where as I extended the frame rails all the way to the front. My front suspension is aftermarket race struts and flaming river steering. I see your from the St. Louis area. Next time I go to gateway I can pm you and you could come to track and check it out if you like.
