1965 Coolant Overflow Tank?

Post by kevinshi »

Hey folks -

My 1965 Caliente has a glass bottle on the side firewall that I have always believed to be a coolant overflow tank, however I have just discovered that it was instead intended as an (optional) resiovor for a supply of "windshields washer solvent." (As specified in the Master Parts Catalog as part number 19550). E.g. apparently you were to store some high concentrate solvent in the bottle to add to the water you used to refill the washer fluid tank.

That led me to researching a bit, and ultimately failing, to figure out "what is the correct coolant overflow/supply for my car?"

The MPC does not seem to indicate that there was simply no solution for the 1965 Comet nor the 1965 Falcon (nothing listed at part numbers 8A080 nor 8077).

Was there simply no overflow/supply for coolant on the 1965 cars? If there was a solution, what was it?
Thanks,
kevin

On my '64 there is no tank it just overflows on to the ground, I guess you are supposed to check the coolant level, oil, etc when you gas it up each time.

Can't say there wasn't any on a '65 but pretty sure none in '64.

Back in the ‘60’s there were no provisions for coolant overflow, you filled the radiator to the top of the upper tank, when it got hot it blew the extra out the overflow hose on to the ground. That process made the system seem it’s correct level. The tree huggers did not like coolant on the ground so overflow tanks were born, they actually work quite well I always include one in my builds.

I got a cheap SS one from ebay. It was like this one but with free shipping I think;

It had a nice polished alum cap that kinda sorta matched my rad cap. I like the skinny little thing ! :) I might not like it so much if I work on the voltage reg.. :lol: but it easy to find a place for it, I already moved it once.

the bottle concentrate also kept it from freezing up in the winter. back then most service stations didn't sell washer fluid so you had to carry it with you,but they did have water so that's why it came to be.

here's my bottle;

I have a plastic one that I took out of something in the junkyard long ago, I like that skinny one I might have to look into getting one similar, I actually painted mine so it would not look so modern, most of that peeled off of course.
