63 S-22 ...260 4 spd
Maybe somebody here can help....I have a all original 63 comet S-22 with a 260, 4 spd and was wondering if anybody has this problem.....when I drive it when going thru the gears i amd revving way high on the tach, when i do 55 mph, im at around 3000 rpm, ive changed the gears out from 343 to 300 and barely slowed it down,im guessing its in the transmission, it revs really high and im afraid on the interstate that im gonna blow it up....its not the clutch slipping ...anybody got any ideas? i changed out the 13 in. tires to 195/14 (which are almost the same size as the 13 in)

Re: 63 S-22 ...260 4 spd
Did a little googling and a 195-70 14 tire rotates 815 times in a mile times a 3.0 gear is 2445 rpm at 60 mph,,,, I think?
Pretty sure your trans is 1to1 in 4 th gear. 2445 is buzzin a bit relative to todays cars but reasonable, sure your tach is correct?

Are you sure of the gear ratios? If it were an original car, it wouldn't have had a 3.43:1 rear gear. That ratio wasn't available.
I drive a '63 260 4-speed car but the engine has been swapped as well as the rear gear. It was originally a 3.25, now a 3.80.
Rpms at 60 mph is 3000 with 205/60-15 tires. It's a street car, not a cruiser.

ok, so its common to run at high RPM, and you were correct about the gear ratio, i have the tag here and just read it, it does say 325 on it my mistake, i feel a little better that my car isnt gonna blow up on me

If you are sure the rear gear is 3.00:1, make sure 4th gear is engaging.
Third gear in the T-10B is 1.41:1. If it's stuck in 3rd, final drive is 4.23:1.
That's around 3100 rpm @ 55 mph.
{EDIT for gear specs}

You can do some "what ifs" with this calculator. According to it, with 195/70x14's and 3.21 axel (closest they get to 3.25), you should be taching 2833 rpm at 65 mph. Ratio that to your 3.25 axle and you should be taching 2868 rpm at 65 mph.

I have used this handy app for driveline angle and for tire/ gear calculations. It’s free and works very well.

Probably the triple tail lights and little fins that remind you of a 60 t-bird
1965 Mercury Cyclone former drag car, 1971 Boss 351 engine, 4 speed, ladder bars, etc. Now returned to a street car.
